Well-known due to her controversial work of endurance performance art, Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight), by which she carried a mattress like the one she claims that she was raped on, Emma Sulkowicz has now or will soon become even more (in)famous. The young graduate of Columbia University, where she claims that the rape occurred (at the hands of another student), has created an "artistic" recreation of the alleged encounter: a full blown pornographic video in which she engages in what starts out as consensual sex and ends as what could (or could not) be interpreted as rape.

Due to the fact that the Manhattan District Attorney's Office could not find reasonable suspicion in regard to her allegations and subsequently decided not to prosecute the young man whom she claims raped her, Sulkowics is considered to be a liar and an attention seeker by some. No doubt, she will be considered an attention seeker by even more people after her pornographic video becomes viral, which I'm sure it will.

I will not post links to the video, because doing so is obviously against the rules. However, if you want to see it for yourselves, then consult Google.

I think it was a little more than just a lack of evidence...there was evidence that appeared to contradict her story. And if she made a full blown porn about being raped...well...honestly in my opinion something is wrong with her mentally.

Yeah sorry, no person who was raped would go put themselves through that painful experience again. I feel like this just proves she is lying...

Going by the top rated comment on her website, she sealed the opinion among many that her "rape" was staged so she could start a porn career.

Not saying that it was her intention, but it makes her look really bad. There are rape victims out there that won't even engage in consensual sex for awhile due to trauma, let alone want to recreate their assault.

She's either lying about the whole thing, or really determined to try to prove her alleged assailant is guilty.

Who knows?, well except her and the student she's pointing fingers at.

Has anyone seen the video? I'm not sure whether or not her motivations behind the video are legitimate. However, I do think that the video is a realistic simulation of how a rape can occur. A woman's initial consent to sex does not negate any subsequent request on her end for the sex to stop, especially if it becomes violent and begins to include activities that she did not have in mind, such as the sudden removal of a condom or the sudden penetration of her anus. Barring all of the controversy surrounding the video, what do you guys think of it in and of itself in regard to being a realistic simulation of rape?

Was the production of this video a joint venture with Rape Land or something?

Kidding aside:

"A woman's initial consent to sex does not negate any subsequent request on her end for the sex to stop"

Not true all the time, legally speaking.

How so? Give me an example. If a woman is having protected vaginal sex with a man but the man suddenly pulls off the condom and proceeds to insert himself into her anus, does the man not have to stop if she asks him to?

Well, even though it's legally okay to continue, I think that it's morally wrong to do so.

To be fair, she's also an artist. Dismissing her as lying about her rape just because most rape victims wouldn't re-enact their own rape doesn't necessarily mean anything. Lots of artists do things that most people wouldn't do, that just goes with the territory.

Seems like she's in it for the attention, as was probably the case with the initial rape accusation if you read up on it.

Interesting question. First of all if she makes a request for him to stop, he might not hear it. Then of course I imagine that in the heat of a moment the guy would have less self-control than normal, I mean it's one thing to control oneself before engaging in sex, but perhaps its harder to exercise self-control when the hormones get pumping so to speak.

As for a "sudden switch" to anal sodomy that she did not anticipate and she wants him to stop, he should abide by that request though I could see why that would be more a moral/honor issue than a legal one (it seems it could be quite messy to try to figure this out in a court, and in court the presumption is that the defendant is innocent). That issue should really be prevented by both parties being clear on their expectations and preconditions prior to engaging in the sexual act, though that is more likely in the event of a relationship than in a "hook-up" between two people that barely know each other. Another similar scenario could be if she finds out that he is married (for example spots a wedding ring on him) during sex and she previously did not know that when she originally consented.

Actually it seems that the line between consent and non-consent, particularly in a "hook-up" situation is quite blurry. I would say that to some extent consent can only be clearly ensured in marriage (excluding those weddings at drive-through chapels in Vegas of course). Outside of marriage, its much more complicated.

@whipassmt: what the heck are you talking about? Consent ends when someone says "no", "stop", or anything else of that nature. It's not as complicated as you're making it seem.

And constant is never ensured not even in marriage. You don't have free reign to do what with your partner as you wish just because you're in a marriage. That is some disturbing stuff if that's what you meant.

That's not what I meant. I meant that in marriage non-consent would only be circumstantial, not personal, in other words, the objection would be to the circumstance of the sex act (e.g. not the right time, I'm tired/busy), not to the person. Married people would generally know each other better, so there would be less surprises and instances where one party unknowingly crosses the other party's boundaries.

As for your first comment when one person says "no" or "stop", the other person might not hear or might think the person isn't being serious.

Well that was far from art, it was just an excuse to have sex with some fat slob on camera whilst trying her best to further her agenda. The actual "Rape," was so terribly done, this was just consensual sex with a bit of play fighting.

Apparently I'm also a rapist now for not receiving her express consent before watching said dribble, fantastic.

The uncertainty of her allegations aside, I think she lost any privilege for courtesy and sensitivity the moment she decided to prostitute herself like that.

saw the tape. It's nasty, both people involved are ugly as hell and even more so when naked.
