Assemblyman Chris J. Brown wants to prevent what happened to Michael Ricci and Maura McGarvey from happening to any other parents.
Caitlyn Ricci, a 2012 graduate of Washington Township High School, filed a lawsuit against her parents after they refused to pay for her to attend an out-of-state university.
"This is all crazy to me," said Brown.
After Ricci's case made headlines, Brown said he got calls and emails from friends and constituents who were dismayed by the judge's decision, which orders Ricci's parents to pay $16,000 toward her education at Temple University. The judge specifically cited a 1982 state Supreme Court ruling that determined divorced parents must contribute to their adult children's higher education.
Brown added there's more to the story than initially reported, including the fact Ricci and McGarvey previously funded classes Caitlyn Ricci took at Rowan College at Gloucester County, then Gloucester County College. When she didn't complete her education there, he said, they set her up in Florida for an internship program that she was ultimately asked to leave. Her parents then cracked down, spurring Ricci to move in with her grandparents and initiate a string of court filings regarding emancipation and tuition bills.
