College cancels performance, Band was "Too White"

In a statement released by Shokazoba shortly after the abrupt cancellation, the band blamed "30 students" who complained "that we were too white to play Afro-beat."

Though the school claims the decision was "not based on the band’s racial identity" but rather "on the intensity and tone" of the "increasingly aggressive" comments left on the committee's Facebook page, Shokazoba insists it was "discriminated against by people who had never even met us or heard one note of our music."

So what do you guys think, is this sort of racism acceptable in today's society?

Most people in OT suggest whites simply aren't discriminated against. Which is one of the reasons I decided to post this.

White people can be discriminated against, but it doesn't happen as often as with other races. At least not in western societies.

White people rule the world and are discriminated against only on a micro/ individual level and not systemically. Hence, discrimination against Whites will never garner the attention that discrimination against minorities does.

Colleges are breeding grounds for anti-White beliefs and White ethno-masochism so this isn't at all surprising. Ever have to sit through a "White privilege" seminar? Ha. Ever read BS about how White males are horrible and hurt everyone? Even history courses are horribly slanted to be anti-Western.

The idea that people of a particular race don't "understand" a genre of music that originated amongst another race is completely and utterly asinine.

I didn't know Vampire Weekend was too white to play at colleges.

I suspect that there's more to this than is being shown. If there were a huge backlash, I could see it. But cancelling the performance because a measly 30 people complained? And furthermore, because the complaint was "they're too white"?

I'm not saying it didn't happen that way, but I need some more information to make up my mind. Cancelling a performance because the performers are "too white/black/jewish/etc" is a risky thing to do these days. ESPECIALLY when the audience is pretty big, and only a tiny percentage of the audience complains.

I'd like to see what the EXACT complaints were.

But yeah...if this happened the way that the article says it happened, then I absolutely agree that it's wrong.

I don't think it's acceptable, but in today's society this kind of madness is to be expected.
