Quick question: can tablets be considered consoles? We have many tablets and many games on them, but is that enough to call them consoles?

Not so long as I am still alive. And no, playing Angry Birds does not make someone a gamer.

Oh god no, if they do start being considered consoles I'll give up gaming because that is the most embarrassing thing to be associated with.
#5 Posted by tudyniuz (676 posts) -
Many said they are consoles, I don't agree.
#6 Posted by Legenkiller59 (6464 posts) -

what because they play Angry Birds? i don't think 1 game can make something considered to be a console

A tablet is a tablet.

A console is a device that depends on connecting to an external video source (TV).

I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one who doesn't consider them consoles.

They're portable but the software is good even to be considered "consoles".

No I wouldn't consider them a console, its more like a monitor for a console, kind of like the relationship between a computer and a monitor I guess.

no, nope nope nope.

It needs to be hooked up to a tv imo. Even a PC doesn't really count as a "console" in my mind. Though you can definitely be considered a gamer with a pc.

gamers care. Gamers spend time working on their skills to be the best they can be at their games. Gamers have been doing it longer. Gamers can spend tens of hours beating a single game. Most tablet games can be beaten in an hour and a half with ease and they can be considered pros by the end of it. It may seem like a pathetic thing to feel threatened by, but if you invest that much time in your hobby you won't exactly appreciate this kind of change. Especially in what it takes to be considered a pro. *goes back to playing "pop the corn" on my ipod touch*

We've got so many newer tablets, lots of older games got ported to tablets, are they finally consoles?

#34 Posted by jun_aka_pekto (15990 posts) -

They can be considered gaming devices of which a console is a mere subset of.

not until we have a name for tablet gamers

we got hermits, lemmings, cows, and sheep, what will tablet gamers be called? personally I think they should be called "fingerbangers"

#37 Posted by foxhound_fox (88062 posts) -

A gaming console is something that hooks up to a TV and uses a secondary input device. It would be okay to compare them to handhelds, but not consoles.

#38 Posted by AmazonTreeBoa (16745 posts) -

No, but they can be considered tablets.

#39 Edited by The-Apostle (12187 posts) -

TC necroed his own topic. >_>

But I would consider them handhelds.

#40 Posted by Nibroc420 (13567 posts) -

This isn't the General gaming forum -.-

#41 Edited by 0Hamburgher (957 posts) -

Technically they are consoles, but many gamers such as myself will not allow it to be considered a video game console in the likes of Playstation and Xbox

#42 Edited by BranKetra (48459 posts) -

Tablets remain distinctly different from dedicated gaming consoles. In fact, anything considered technically a tablet in their current forms should not ever be considered a console, so /thread one year later.

I don't think so, isn't it under the mobile category?
