Calif. woman says chihuahua died saving her kids

A Northern California woman says her Chihuahua died protecting her children from two pit bulls that got into her apartment.

Mayda Estrella, of Richmond, says the family's Chihuahua, named Manchas, jumped in between the canine invaders and her 4-year-old son Sunday. A pit bull grabbed Manchas with its jaws and carried the Chihuahua away.

Contra Costa County animal services officials say the Chihuahua was killed, and the pit bulls are now in custody.

The pit bulls' owner says they had escaped their yard by chewing through a fence. Estrella says her front door was open when the dogs came in.

She says when she saw the dogs come in, she ran into a bedroom with her other child, a newborn baby.

County officials say the owner won't face criminal charges.

Why not close the door to the newborn baby's room and then help your other kid?

Nice save by the chihuahua. I still think they are glorified rats, but I have a soft spot for this particular dog.

And no the owner should not be charged if the dogs uhh chewed through the fence. I don't know how hardcore these dogs are but chewing through a fence is hardcore. I don't think there are any laws saying you have to keep pitbulls tied up within your property. Different cities different laws I guess.

I hate pitbulls and dogs like that. It seems more often than not, the people how tend to buy these kind of dogs are not responible enough to secure them from harming other people and animals. The new neighbor behind me now has a pitbull and it freaks me out. I have two small dogs and only a four foot tall fence. I have my long sword within arms reach of to patio door in case I see that dog in my yard.

At least the kid was okay, Poor dog though, I just wish cats were as loyal.
