Rotten Tomatoes

Metacritic

So the review embargo lifted yesterday, and as more and more early reviews keep pouring in, there seems to be a consensus that the movie is not good. As of making this topic the movie was at a 47 on metacritic and a 39% on rotten tomatoes which is pretty bad.

I had a feeling this one wasn't going to turn out great but was hoping I would be wrong. It sounds like the movie is a bit of a confused mess that tries too hard to be dark. Still looks like I may be seeing it this weekend with friends so I will be able to give my own opinion on it then, but for now all we have are the critic reviews and they are not looking good.

So what do you all think? Are you disappointed? Are these bad reviews going to make you think twice about seeing it in theaters?

Semms like DC's "straight to" animation efforts have been considerably better.

Watched The Dark Knight Returns a few years back, great.

Dc needs to give up on the regular heros and put their effort into the vertigo line.

It looks to me like they need to lock down a category they can compete in.

They want dark and gritty yet still push superman.

What kind of sense does that make?

The vertigo line is right there in front of them and can't be any darker and grittier.

I agree. Too bad I won't know what it's worth until after I've paid to see it, though.

I'll probably be seeing it on Saturday anyway, but honestly this is worse than I expected (55-65% range) which is concerning. The fact that Snyder is directing doesn't seem to be helping anything and makes me very concerned about the two-part Justice League is scheduled to direct. Making matters worse, according to some reviews I've seen is the fact the first trailer basically laid out the plot of the film, and there are no 'tricks up the sleeve'.

Stop watching reviews and see the movie if you're interested. You may like, you may not. Don't base your opinion off what someone else thinks.

I can't say that I'm really too surprised but I am a little disappointed even though I'm not a big DC fan. I do enjoy most of the Batman and Superman stuff so I'll likely still watch this movie.

@LJS9502_basic: this is why services like Redbox are a godsend. I can see it for a mere $1 and if I don't agree with critics I still got to see the movie and if I DO agree with the bad reviews, well at least I didn't waste $20+ on the pile of crap.

Only reason I am seeing this in theaters is becaude my friends and I are making it part of a weekend of being awesome. I am not excited for this movie but don't think I will hate myself for seeing it (like I would have had I seen something like Annabelle in theaters for instance).

We shall see. I liked Man of Steel more than most seemed too and in general I think Snyder is a solid director.

Definitely a ton of questionable choices made in the casting in this movie and with that awful trailer that essentially killed any excitement I had for the movie...

Well yeah Ben Affleck's in it for starters.

Secondly they don't fight to the end so I don't care.

I'm more of a Marvel guy, but The Bat is one of my favorites in the DC Universe!! He's the only reason I'm going to see it in theaters, other then that, I'd wait for it to come out on Bluray.

Superhero movies are usually crappy, the only exception is the Nolan's Batman. The Dark Knight is not even a perfect superhero movie but one of the best movies ever ! It set the bar so high.

Usually people say to ignore the critics, but when not only big critics bash the movie but also the ones that are not proffessionals tell you that you need to be drunk to have a good time then we got a problem.

I enjoy this perticular review IT HAS SPOILERS!!!

I'm not all that too worry here, since I'm off Friday, I already got my advance tickets to go see Batman/Superman anyways and remember that this is the first time Bats & Sups will be together for the first time on the big screen so that's saying something and also remember this, this movie is supposed to be the start of the Justice League movie so this has to be a successful to do so. Once I see the movie this Friday, I'll return to give my opinion on it.

Looking forward to posting those box office numbers this Sunday.

Still seeing it. There were movies on MetaCritic that didn't really score well but I gave it a chance and I ended up enjoying them. I waited a lifetime to see a live action Batman vs Superman movie and on top of that an introduction to the Justice League. This is it and I'll watch it and enjoy for what it's worth.

Not sure why people thought it would be good. Man of Steel was horrible. It literally made no sense. Sure its about a super powered alien but other aspects just went full retard.

1. Why didn't superman just fly up and throw his pod at the world engine as it orbitted earth. Solved.

2. Kryptonians sentence the bad guys to an alternate dimension safe from their planet which is about to blow up. Er shouldn't that be the other way around ?

3. When they kamikazi the world engine by flying supermans pod into it creating this black hole where everything is getting sucked in, cars, large pieces of buildings other super powered kryptonians. Lois Lane falls. Seriously what is she made of ? As she falls cars and debris are going UP and Superman has a hard time flying away from it while she unaffected hangs on looking bored.

You like anime, your standards are already rock bottom.

Oh and what exactly was bad about Guardians, DOFP, or Winter Soldier? They were loved by critics and audiences, and I thought they were great. But other than that, yes most comic book movies suck. Just like ANY other genre.

Loading Video...

If you've read the comics or watched the Superman: The Animated Series, Superman is portrayed as more optimistic and bright. Metropolis is shown gleaming and modern and usually whatever is going on, it's during the daytime. The video up above is a great example of the vast difference between Superman and Batman.

The issue is that because of the success of Nolan's Batman, the producers (or whoever is in charge) are assuming that if you make something dark and gritty, it'll automatically be good, ignoring that it depends entirely on the character. It's like having an unpatriotic Captain America or a drama-driven humorless Deadpool. You're ignoring what the character represents and making a drastic and risky change.

IMO, the Justice League Animated series did an incredible job portraying the DC heroes. Superman was still optimistic and bright but has doubts and reservations and even acts on his darker side in an alternative timeline. And even then, it depends entirely on the environment itself.

Sorry for the rant, the whole dark and gritty thing is overrated. Man of Steel was garbage because of the direction. The actors were fine though. The point is, Superman is usually an optimistic force for good. A gritty Superman, however, makes no sense unless there is a clear character development that marks that significant change.

I totally agree with this, no wonder how many people deicide not to watch some movies after reading movies. My father does the same thing,

Father:- Lets go son to see a XYZ marvel movie.

Me:- Sure.

Father:- Ok wait, let me check review online and also let us see the trailer first.

Me:- Sure.

Father (after reading review) :- Hmm, I think it will be a waste of time. This doesn't seem that of a good movie. I don't know.

Me:- Sure.

To be fair, if a movie is pretty much getting nothing but horrible reviews, it's probably a piece of crap. When it comes to movies, it's pretty uncommon for EVERYONE to be wrong about it.

I pretty much stream all of my content nowadays and see very little at the cinema. Il wait for this to hit a streaming service and pay a couple of quid to watch it at home rather than £10 a ticket for something hit or miss. Il happily pay to see movies if im excited about them but if not then I wont. If anything my issue is with the extortionate price of going to the cinema in the UK.

Never really considered the second point. Good logic there. What I don't get is why the Bat v Supe movie is dark/gritty. Aren't we marketing this to kids? I'm taking my boy and his friend to see it tomorrow. They are second graders. Why the heck would you make a dark movie if that is a large portion of your target audience?
