At restaurant with friends, bill comes around what do you do

Do you split it up evenly, such as a bill is $100, party of 5, so $20 each (regardless of how much each person ate, even someone just had the bread and some water)?

Do you pay just what you had, are you one of those people?

Or do you take turns paying the entire bill, basically taking turns for it being your treat.

Everyone pays what they had. Seems fair to me.

In my case, everyone carries their own weight.

I ask when I sit down to have my bill separate from the rest. Easier.

We pay the amount for what we ate plus tip. Doesn't make sense to split it evenly if someone had a steak dinner while someone else just had an appetizer.

We pay our own bill. I'll buy rounds at the bar but not dinner and a sit-in. The exception if it's like the drive-thru late night type of night. Then it's all fair to divy up the pot or front the money for the group.

Usually when we go out as a group, everyone pays for their own unless it's a special occasion where one of us wants to make an invitation and pay.

But I know if Im with a group and I only eat a tiny bi, they wouldnt let it slide...

Split the bill between how many people are there, you vulgar pikeys. If someone's eating a steak and you're just getting a bowl of salad and a glass of water what the **** are you doing meeting friends in a restaurant? Grow up, or don't be such a money scrimping ass bitch.

That makes no sense at all. Why should your friends pay for your meal?

Depends on the people I'm with. If it's a close friend(s), I don't mind paying the entire bill because we have formed that type of relationship. They will pay for me one time, i'll pay for them one time...give a penny, take a penny.

If we are going out to a special type of restaurant like a tapas bar, then I don't mind doing an even split.

If it's just a day out at Bennigan's with a group of acquaintances, then everybody pays for their own meal.

My friends don't have as much money so I try to pick up the tab when I can.

I make a conscious effort to only dine out with people who are like myself and will fight over who gets to pay the entire check.

There is one cheap son of a bitch and his wife who I HAVE to eat out with every once and a while. These two always run up the bill more than anyone else and every time want to split the bill evenly. They never ever offer to pay the entire bill even though they have been covered by everyone a number of times. These are the same assholes who would gladly come to my house and drink all my expensive liqueur and then tell me byob next time I go to their house. Why do I even bother with these two? Well, unfortunately we're related.

FYI it makes everyone at the table seem like cheap poor fucks when everyone gets out their phone to do math and starts haggling over the bill...

I feel socially awkward in public, so I avoid the issue by only getting drive-through, and eating on my own in the darkened corners of car parks.

Everyone pays their own bill. I've never heard of doing it any other way.

Split er up, you'll find very quickly that there's always one in a group that tries to get someone else to pay thier way.

Everyone pays their share, seems like the fairest way to do things. Unless someone volunteers to pay.

Wow at some of these posts, ^ ^ this post is exactly what was going through my mind when people said they split it up down to... down to outright separate bills, I mean maybe it's the different culture speaking (you're all americans obviously, westerners etc, basically non-Arabs right) but why not get separate tables while you're at it, separate friends, separate everything? Really am amazed and surprised at some of the responses, this must be culture shock.

Pay for what you had unless you invited them all. Then you'd pay for it all.

You leave no room for argument or hurt feelings if everyone pays their own. There's no risk to the relationships.

Well first off, I'm Colombian not American. Second of all, what does paying seperate bills have to do with getting "separate friends, separate everything"??? Not everyone can afford to pay everyone's bills although there are exceptions like special invitations where one of us wants to invite everyone else, however that is not the norm especially as college students working sub-par jobs. We aren't materialistic and vain people like many Arabs who have to pretend or show off to be rich. Who gives a crap what people think or what "you appear as" when you go out to eat as friends as long as you have a good time.

Why should others pay more if I want a steak while they prefer a salad? Or vice versa? My friends and I don't base our friendship on whether or not we chip in for each other's dinners.
