If so, what for?

I'm not much of a hunter or anything, but I sleep with a Mossberg 500 under my bed strictly for home protection. I Live in what most would call a decent middle class neighborhood but it seems like we are having constant problems. My next door neighbors house got burglarized when they were gone recently. The thief took the spare key off of their wall and came back and stole their truck. My car has been vandalized three times the last year right in my driveway in the past year, and not too long ago I was woken up by police lights in my window because they were searching the bushes near my house for some night prowler. It's weird because to the naked eye my neighborhood seems pretty nice, most people are always shocked when I tell them about these things. I feel almost obligated to own a firearm to protect not only myself but my family if somebody tries to break into my house. Anyone else in OT feel this way?

I don't live in the U.S. so obviously I don't suffer from weekly house invasions. So no need for a gun.

Yeah, it's really pretty sad. I want to get out of this country. Where are you from?

#4 Posted by Guybrush_3 (8308 posts) -

Yes, I have guns for hunting.

No. I'm in Australia and we don't have messed up laws.

Isn't it in Australia where they ban video games...

#9 Posted by kingdre (9456 posts) -

Nope. Guns are too expensive over here.

Yep...own quite a few guns.

What's that supposed to mean? I'm an Australian and I own four rifles, they'd be my first option for self defence if need be, legal or not. I'd prefer to end up in court than six feet under.

Civillians here generally don' t have guns so I don' t either. My brother who' s a police officer once gave me to hold his gun though. :o

No, and I don't think I know anyone who owns a gun. I honestly wouldn't know where to get one if I wanted one.

That's old news now.

They did ban a few games in the past, due to our stupid classification system. People complained about it, and the government fixed the system.

#16 Posted by Legend002 (7354 posts) -

Only in video games.

#17 Posted by jimkabrhel (15422 posts) -

No, but I have family members that have owned and do own guns. I've shot a few in my life, but I have no interest in owning one myself. I have no problem with citizens owning guns, as long as they are using them for hunting, sports shooting, and home protection.

I don't like the idea of concealed carry, but I have to deal with it in my state.

I have a 22 bolt action rifle for shredding paper targets. I plan on starting a collection of firearms but that probably wont happen til after I get the hell out of New York.

#19 Posted by Rattlesnake_8 (18415 posts) -
My family currently has a .306 for hunting, a .22 rifle and a shotgun for bird hunting. Eventually I plan to have a couple hand guns and assault rifles for target shooting and home protection.

Why on earth is a bolt action gun your choice for shredding targets?

It's the kind of rilfe that is used (or was used) on rifles teams when I was in high school.

#22 Posted by roulettethedog (11020 posts) -

I own one 20 gauge shot gun that I keep in 3 parts. Barrel, trigger/stock ,and a connection piece. I have not fired this weapon since my dog died in 2009. I gave him a 9 gun salute.

It may take some time but when I'm done with them they are pretty well shredded. I guess target shooting would have been more accurate.

If I have to own guns to survive in this country USA, that means it's pretty bad.. then I'm gonna have to move somewhere.
#25 Posted by hippiesanta (9946 posts) -
not american, not a gun owner... but i was tought to handle rifle since early teen by parents
#26 Posted by dagreenfish (1817 posts) -
Never felt the need or desire to own one.
#27 Posted by Pirate700 (46465 posts) -

Yes I am. I use them for target shooting, home protection (hopefully never have to) and I enjoy collecting them.

#28 Posted by MonoSilver (1525 posts) -
Considering where I live, no. Even if I were to live in a more uncivilised area I wouldn't buy a gun.
#29 Posted by Scissorman88 (173 posts) -

I don't own any

#30 Posted by Wasdie (50359 posts) -

I have a couple, all old military surplus from various nations. I'm working on buying an M1 Garand soon though.

I own them as a hobby. Shooting, cleaning, repairing, restoring, and then owning bits of history. I don't keep any of them loaded for self defense. I don't live in an area where that would be a precaution I need to take. I can leave my garage door wide open all day while I'm at work an my golf clubs are still there when I get back.

I have an arsenal locked up in my basement. They are family heirlooms. Haven't shot them since I was little visiting my grandpa in Kentucky.

that can't be true. You can walk into someones home in the UK and if you hurt the intruder they can sue you lol. SO with that i am sure house invasion is up there

That's easy to say if your from a good neighborhood. Try the east side of Detroit where the cops don't even feel safe and there is a 50/50 chance that they don't even show up if you call them..
#39 Posted by bnarmz (1425 posts) -

yes, but I keep my ratchets locked away, i don't really like guns. In fact I havn't even looked at them in month's, maybe more than a year ago. There's absolutely no need for me to be picking them up unless I plan on using them. tbh, I rather use my martial arts training before pulling a trigger, any panzy can fire a gun. Over the years I'm finding more and more cowards are falling in love with guns.

Actually that can happen in the US as well, which is why any attorney would tell you to shoot a home invader dead

No, I'm not a gun owner, but I respect the right of individuals to own them. Kinda how I may not agree with a lot of opinions on various topics, but I respect the right and free expression of their opinion.

A gun may be helpful in some situations, but generally speaking you can survive without one.

I collect C&R firearms so I do have guns. The guns I use for self protection at home are newer modern firearms though.

#45 Posted by unrealtron (3148 posts) -
No, even though my country is really insecure. I think we got the third highest rate of homicides of south America.
#46 Posted by GameGuy642003 (1768 posts) -
Yes Sir. I own a 30-06 and a 12 gauge shotgun. I like to go hunting big game as well as bird. I've gotten my fair share of dove and have killed a wild boar, cooked it and ate it. I've gotten close to getting a white-tailed buck but its hard hunting in California's Yosemite areas.
#47 Posted by lilasianwonder (5964 posts) -

Nope

#48 Posted by airshocker (30628 posts) -

I have a few guns, not counting my service weapons. I have an AR-15 for target shooting, and a Glock 21 .45 ACP for protection.

I'm planning on getting a shotgun for my wife because she's not the greatest pistol shooter in the world.
