Its not just Gamespot that has turned into a ghost town, all internet forums I visit are extremely quiet compared to what they were a few years ago, and some don't exist at all now.

I used to visit a forum called "NexGenWars" you might remember the site because they published questionable sales numbers on there site home page in the Wii/360/ps3 generation. Was sad to see those forums closed, ended up on Gamespot not long after.

Why do you think internet forums are so quiet these days, are they going to die out all together at some point ?

Even before I read that article I knew that social media was to blame for the slow demise of forums.

Don't forums just die and get replaced by new ones though?

Yeah but Its still not nice when one dies you were a long term member of, when nexgenwars died I lost contact with most of the members because the only way I ever interacted with them was through that forum.

It would be similar if Gamespot ever closed its forums.

Also even if newer forums replace old ones, the trend is still forums in general are quieter and are still declining.

I think there are other factors, forums are susceptible to other forms of entertainment, over the last few years we have More engrossing time consuming games like MMO's, You can instantly stream TV shows, Movies, Sporting Events, Tablets, Phone games etc etc

Could just be less free time for forums

It's the same dumb people, making the same dumb topics, saying the same dumb shit for years, myself included since I've been a member just shy of ten years.

I was listening to "Final Breath" soundtrack from Child of Light's OST while I read that. It really gets depressing to see all your faceless friends going away. I know this feeling but my experience is a bit too shady to share here.

I blame social media too, guess mostly everyone is starting to get very lazy and don't feel like going on their computers but rather on their phones mostly all day.

@thehig1: Its that abomination that is social media that is killing our beloved forums man. I can't live without my forums :(

Although, while social media has severely impacted traffic in forums it has made them more "hardcore" by weeding out the plebs that would give up glorious forums for inferior Facebook and twitter. We're running lean now. However, forums seem to have lost lolz value as those capable of generating it profusely have migrated to social media as stated already. So you win some you lose some I guess.

I'd argue that Reddit has fucked up forums for real, much more than social media did considering that it has the ability of attracting more serious audience. Its like one gigantic forum extending to every topic and interest out there. Its like the Walmart of forums.

Agreed, I sure do miss the days when forums were more popular, and great web sites like this one had things a lot more right, back then, it felt like the internet was more worth it and successful, now, not so much. All these web sites wind up being targets, of having the creativity and usefulness get sucked right out of them.

Forums are definitely dying. It's unfortunate. You can't connect with as many people over a certain subject on Facebook like you can on a forum.

True that has sped up the decline of this forum, although it still would have declined if the redesign wasn't screwed up because all forums have declined.

Forums are arguably one of the last surviving social networking constructs of "web 1.0." chat clients, bbs, etc. are all non-existent (or exist primarily for questionable behavior.) It's surprising that forums still exist at all. Someone a few posts up made a humorous comment about how Reddit is "the Wal-Mart of forums." That seems pretty accurate. Any forum needs can presumably be met via Reddit.

Yeah, social media is the main reason forums aren't what they used to be. I mean, what else could it be? For this site, the big 2013 redesign is also a contributing factor. As someone who has been using forums for over 10 years, it's sad to see this has happened.

Forums are a place where people could express their thoughts and feelings in detail and engage in conversation with others focusing on not only getting their point across but also listening to that of other people.

Social media allows people to voice their opinion no matter how ridiculous in 140 characters for the world to digest. Who needs a conversation when you can just regurgitate all over the internet and even have celebs engage with you 1 on 1. Now its possible to evaluate the worthiness of someone's point simply by liking it, re-tweeting it or seeing how much green there is next to a video. We live in a society that likes to quantify the human experience.

The question is not ....are you happy?

Its how happy are you?

how happy do you look?

Social media lets us quantify our experience by allowing other people to rate our experiences.

I love my new suit, let me put a picture on facebook and see how many likes it gets. Wow....15 people like that picture of me....now I feel better about myself and this suit. Now I feel more valued amongst my peers.

Wow I like person X and his new suit, 15 people liked it, I wonder where I could get a suit like that. I wonder where he is going in a suit like that....Ohhh it says on facebook he is going to #London, iv always wanted to go there.....person X always does cool stuff. I wish I was more like person X.

Ehmm, first of all forums are a social medium so forums are being replaced by itself?

But no forums aren't dying go to Neogaf and other popular forums and you will find tons of posts each day by 100´s of users. People are just spread over many various forms of social media , blogs (yes some blogs do still exist and the popular ones actually makes a fair amount of cash) reddit, twitch, youtube, instagram, twitter, etc.... So it seems like some parts are less active than others.

Gamespot on the other hand made the mistake of not listening to its users before it went on with a redesign and it has cost them a fair amount of regulars and also with the spam its not able to attract new users as fast as before.

Ya most are dying fast. Mostly I think do to changing tech like self phones and sites like twitter and Facebook. It will be a sad day if or when that happens as I've learned more from various forums about an almost uncountable number of things, then have in any other way of communicating on the internet. Facebook Twitter and all the new social app services offer up nothing more then clickbait, greef porn or any number of other non informative and unnecessary things that do nothing but cloud up my day. Hell without forums I'd know nothing about computers or even that there's a whole world of psychedelic plants that have the potential to change millions of lives but are kept illegal and under the rug for no reasons.

Hell I don't have a single modern social media account. Mainly because they all fucking suck. I don't care what others think in short text like form with no context or tone. Or see what people made for breakfast, or see them be all egotistical and artificially make their lives look better by taking and hand picking pictures that put them in awesome happy places 100% of the time. Especially when all those companies say they are free but then go and sell my usage data to anyone with cash.

Though I gotta admit, it was nice to look at the good old OT posters here, I thought they have comeback but when I saw this thread was made, my heart was broken because I thought Korvus and GazaAli came back to post here :(

Depends on where you go. Blizzard WoW forums, for example, are very active. It just depends. They're dead here but that's only because other sites are more popular by a large margin (IGN).

They've been dying slowly. But as long as they are still here, i will be on. I think the old timers like myself enjoy a good read, and real people, sharing real thoughts. As with social media, and videos, people seem to be more fake. But forums, people seem to be more open.

There's good and bad for lower forum members/posters.

Bad is that communities die, and websites will close them because of low traffic.

The good however is that the people left are more enthusiasts of whatever the website or forum is about. So now you have enthusiasts talking with other enthusiasts. Which in itself is pretty cool.
