The worlds biggest fast-food chain just got a little bigger.

Subway has opened its 40,000th outpost worldwide. The sprawling chain has already added 1,761 outlets since the start of 2013 and plans to add another 10,000 new locations by 2017, says Don Fertman, the sandwich giants chief development officer. McDonalds (MCD), the worlds second-biggest fast-food chain, currently counts around 34,700 restaurants.

While Subway is expanding faster now in such overseas markets as Russia, Brazil, France, and the U.K., Fertman believes theres still room for growth back home in the U.S., including what he calls underserved markets such as Boston and Philadelphia. It might even be possible for Subway to cross the 100,000 location threshold by 2030, according to some scenarios envisioned by the company.

In the interest of adding locations, the chain isnt shy about squeezing tiny stores into nontraditional spaces, such as laundromats, health clubs, and movie theaters. The 40,000th Subway, for instance, is located inside an AppleGreen gas station in Ipswich, England. Heres a look at how Subway grew from a single shop in Bridgeport, Conn., which served its first customer in 1965, to a multinational sandwich maker with stores in 102 countries, including Iceland and Zambia (two nations where its impossible to order a Big Mac, by the way).

Pretty legit. I see Subway a lot when I go out but I always thought Mickey D's had more. McDonald's dominates in profit, though.

This is just insane. 40,000 outlets for a single fast food chain? and by the year 2030, the company envisions that it may reach 100,000 outposts? This is ridiculously insane :| This is downright scary

I noticed that I saw a lot more Subways then anything else while driving from Texas to Idaho when I moved last month.

A lot of them in gas stations, Wal-Marts, etc too.

It's not like subway has a lot of different items available. I do wish that they'd offer a lobster sandwich and expand the availability of mozzarella cheese.

I"m glad more people are eating healthier (subway) but im hardly a fan of the company. I pay $8 after tax for a three meat club sandwhich and they literally put 3-4oz of meat on a 12 inch roll..... (what a joke). They want me to basically pay $8 for a salad on a bun

I started to buy fresh nitrate free meat on sale for $3-4 per pound and I've been making my own (not only is it healthier but it taste better at a fraction of the cost).

Huh! That's actually surprising to me. Then again, I never go to or keep up with Subway so that'd be why. To be honest, it's hard for me to decide which place is more disgusting.

They have $5 footlongs but not for club sandwhiches (clubs are extra since they are suspose to add extra meat but they don't really do that). Almost all of the $5 footlongs are single meat (for example I would be paying $5 for a salad with a couple peices of turkey).

That used to be my beef with Taco Bell. The shell contains 75% lettuce and cheese while meat makes up 25%.

Great news. With Subways you get more food, better tasting food at that, for your money than with Mcdonalds. I find that a Spicy Italian footlong with a slew of topings( I love them spicy) can keep me full for about 8-10 hours whereas a Big Mac or chicken sandwich would only satisfy me for about 3 hours. The McDonalds dollar menu tastes downright awful.

Makes sense. They can be smaller and easier to operate than McDonald's. Hell, there was a Subway in my highschool. There are at least 6 Subways in my town that I know of and only 3 McDonald's.

I disagree, I don't know which subs you buy but my Spicy Italians are never bland or small(that's what she said! :P). I'll pick up a sub tomorrow in the afternoon and post pic of it to prove my point(this is totally not an excuse for me to pick one up :P).

well that was some years ago, back when they didnt try to regulate what the schools served as lunch.

they were even talking about putting a Mcdonalds in there, but i moved to Illinois before i found out if it happened or not.

it just seemed normal. was just a different line to stand in to get food.

oh and they served sweet tea everyday, was amazing.

Except that subway is not actually healthy.. LOTS of calories.

Um, since when does having calories mean its unhealthy? Amount of calories has nothing to do with how healthy something is. Please in the future, refrain from entering discussions and spewing false info about subjects you know nothing about. We have enough people like you in the fitness industry as it is. Thanks
