@magicalclick: Well, I guess that's one way to solve bullying. I guess the reputation of the Chinese women as "tiger ladies" is well-deserved, they're not afraid to dish out the discipline.

I hope you don't mind if I got a few chuckles out of your post, I don't doubt that you're telling the truth, but the teachers fighting gang members sounds funny (I picture them Kung fu fighting).

Every society always has had and always will have problems. Be glad we don't have political prisoners locked up like Cuba does or a one-child policy like China.

lmao that's a terrible argument. "Be glad you don't live in a shithole!" Why are China and Cuba the benchmarks the US needs to compare itself to? That's quite a low bar and says a lot about the country.

He's talking about taking things for granted that other countries don't have, then you all of the sudden pull this "...says a lot about the country" pseudo-argument? lol, oh don't talk about right arguments if yours isn't good either.

You're mistaken. I most certainly didn't say anything of the sort. You need to re-read what you're trying to attribute to me.

Any country that has Social Security that takes care of you, gives you health care, and, prescription drug coverage just because you are disabled is a good one in my book.

I can't really comment on much of what you said, much of it is based of opinion and personal experiences. However I could tell you that the average American is still better off than most other developed countries. (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median_household_income ) the u.s ranks 6th in median house hold income (median is the middle 50th percentile of the income distribution, so the millionaires or what ever make no effect on it) and ranks in the top 10 ppp gdp per capita.

Nah you don't have the priorities list quite right. Instead, all countries that have it and use it, the biggest problem of all seriously needs to get worked on: The internet.

Far too many problems with it.

For decades, the Christian Right has been trying to convince Americans that social conservatism and abstinence-only sex education programs will reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. The problem is that the exact opposite is true: European countries with comprehensive sex-ed programs and liberal sexual attitudes actually have lower rates of teen pregnancy and STDs.

Ah, but plummeting birth rates represent a major threat to the demographics of many of these same European countries.

Perhaps they should import America's "abstinence only" sex education curricula! It would seem preferable to importing the Third World and pretending that multiculturalism works.

lulz, the mission statement over at science forums.net should be welcome to random science forum, where we don't use science to answer the questions we have about the world around us.

Here is another rant I found and I found it in City Data

"Years ago, Americas mantra what is was the greatest country on earth. I agree but only if you are rich and have connections. If you are an average joe or poor, America is probably the worst westernized country you would want to live in.

Here are reasons why:

Unless you live in LA, Chicago or NYC, you can forget about public transit which means you will be using your car, wasting gas, creating emissions etc.

America is probably the most violent westernized country. Every day there is a mass shooting somewhere.

America doesn't have a good school system. You have kids graduating from high school and colleges who can't read, write, or do simple math. On top of that colleges are putting millions of students each year into debt so they can use their degree at Starbucks...

I know this is a sensitive subject, but America has a big race problem. Everything revolves around race from college admissions, to hiring, to benefits, to even criminal sentencing. It gets annoying. It truly does and I'm sick of it.

There is no employer and employee loyalty anyone. Companies only use you for what they can get out of you at the least cost and then they spit you out. They can care less about you, or your bills, or your family.

America is the only westernized nation where employers are not mandated to give vacation time. Yes, some companies have liberal vacation policies but the average worker will get one week off per year. What a joke! No wonder you have people dropping dead at age 35.

America is a dysfunctional nation. We get involved in silly wars just to protect corporate Americas interests. The invasion of Iraq was silly but hey, Cheney, Bush, and all of his buddies made billions off of it. A lot of the 9/11 hijackers were of Saudi decent or had Saudi passports. Why didn't we go invade Saudi? Because of oil, that's why. Oh BTW, I'm a Operation Iraq Freedom veteran...

And don't get me started on our political leaders in DC. What a bunch of crooks!

I'm a single male and I have to say, the dating scene in this country is garbage. Basically you have to find your future wife in high school or you can forget about finding a relationship in this country. I don't know what it is about the women here but they think they deserve a model with 30 million in the bank.

So to sum it up, I wouldn't recommend America to anyone. It's vapid, dull, everyone is stressed out and competing in a rat race, and the rich control everything. I would recommend Australia or some of those western european countries. At least in those places you have a social safety net and free healthcare. The quality of life is higher too.

I know someone will reply back and say, "If America sucks, why don't you leave?" Well, I would but you have to remember, it's harder to immigrate to other countries. It's not like here where an illegal can get a free apartment, healthcare, and welfare checks while veterans can't even be seen at the VA!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I guess we buck the trend then. My kid is a college freshman. But, she's already finished a big chunk of her calculus stuff as a senior in HS.

Every big city has a transit system, not just L.A., NYC, or Chicago. Where I am, we also have little buses that make the rounds in residential areas, taking seniors into the city and back.

It's my responsibility to live within my means. Why would I want my employer getting involved with my finances? I happen to love my work as a weather forecaster. Same goes for my coworkers. Just the same.... There are standards to enforce. You come to work drunk or disheveled and mouthing off at everyone, there will be problems and you might just find yourself out the door.

I can't speak for everyone. But, I'm on paid vacation for 20 days right now. I can't complain. It's not like the military where the norm is 30 days a year. But, I'll happily take my 20 days. Of course, if you're a government employee, you have it made.

The wars suck. I'm not fond of them myself. But, if it's not us, it'll be some other country. I'm not naive enough to think there will be world peace if the US withdrew from the world stage. Some other country will fill the vacuum and slap other countries around.

If you can't find a date, I don't know what to say. My brother in law immigrated from the Philippines, found a job, and married a nice small town girl in Nevada. If he can do it, so can you. I'm kinda surprised though because she is much taller than him.

My mother in law was never a US citizen. She was just a resident alien with her green card. Yet, even she managed to find free health care. I mean the service will not be laid out on a silver platter. But, if you look for it, it's there. We found free health care for her here in AZ. We found free heath care for her in NY.

I'll admit, I have a dislike for the gangbanger culture. I think it's a bad influence for the younger folks and I avoid associating with them. But, I have no problems with African-Americans who want to better themselves. We have African-Americans here in the subdivision. They don't fit the gangbanger stereotype. They're just like any other neighbor. Their kids are friends with my kids and other kids. They walk together to school. I had African-American friends in the college and university campuses I attended. I have them now on the online courses I'm taking.

I seem to have no problems getting medical appointments with the VA whether in NY, while vacationing in NV, or here in AZ especially post-scandal. I'm not sure what your situation is. But, I seem to have no issues. Hell. the VA have been paying for my education. I haven't had to spend much except for software such as Visio and Project.

Being a military brat, I lived in many countries abroad. They're nice to visit and all. But, I still prefer to have my home here in the US.

I used to love America...or the idea of it. Have never been there.

We get flooded with films, music etc revolving around the States, and it just seems like this great exciting place.

But then I got older and reality hit, America is not this amazing perfect country...it's one of the most corrupt western nations up in here.

I will definitely visit someday. I am pretty sure that there are some cool aspects about the place. But I would never dream of living there. Human rights just seem too far and few between.

Racism is huge and still is today. From police, to school and even jobs. Is just pretty annoying. Why is everything build up on race or nationality?

This is one thing I get so damned sick of hearing about. America brings in millions of immigrants each and every year. We do it at such a huge rate that whites will no longer be the majority in America in 20-30 years. Nobody's putting a gun to the nation's head to do it, it just does. Right now whites are the only ethnic group in the world willingly making themselves minorities in the countries they were previously majorities in. It ain't just America, western countries all over the world are opening up their borders to millions of immigrants of all ethnicities. Yet no matter what we do we have to hear this crap incessantly.

I got news for you, people are dicks and the younger they are the bigger of dicks they tend to be. When someone calls someone else the n word or some other racial slur it isn't always because of racism. Plenty of times it's because they simply wanted to insult the person and their ethnicity was the most obvious thing to go after. People love to bash other people for ANY REASON they can think of. They'll insult you if you're fat, if you're skinny, if you're short, if you're dumb, if you're nerdy, if you're poor, if they don't like the clothes you're wearing, if you're a different ethnicity than they are, if you never get laid, if you're promiscuous, if you've got acne, if you're gay, if you're ugly, if you don't have a job, if you've got a job but it's not a prestigious job, if you've got a big nose ... any goddamned thing they can think of! If you're an Asian walking down the street in America and some kid going by in a car yells "Chink!" at you that doesn't say a damned thing about racism in America or even that town. All it demonstrates is that some asshole kid felt like insulting someone for fun and he picked a racial slur because that was the most immediate and easy thing to say. If you want to say there's too many assholes in America I'll agree with you. But there's assholes everywhere no matter what country you're in!

But yeah, true racism does exist in America, it exists everywhere. How could it not? Look at nature, there's racism freaking everywhere in nature; if it looks different kill it! There's that goofy line that naive leftists love to use "racism is learned". That's a crock of shit. Tolerance is learned, racism is what you're born with. There are racists in America but I'd argue that we're one of the least racist countries in the world. Why the hell else would we be moving the 3rd world in here? If there were a country somewhere populated by people with polka dots America would be shipping them in too. A lot of these other countries that you seem to think are better don't have problems with racism because they don't allow people of other ethnicities through the door to begin with! How the hell can you have racism problems in a society if there's nobody different around to exercise racism on?

Oh. Okay. That's fine. My reply is to the rant. I never really direct anything at a person. I direct my replies at the text. That means I have no grudge against anyone here.

@bforrester420: Well like I said I don't think we're the worst. America is huge. You can't just judge one state for a country. Iran,

North Korea and Iraq are just a few to name.. I also keep asking myself is the crime higher in North Korea or America?

What makes America more shitty than the rest of the industrialized world is the fact that the rich have managed to fragment the lower classes with religion. The rich never managed to do this in Europe which is why their social structures are much more modern. Religion in Europe is something that the higher middle class is occupied with, whilst the workers are the least religious of the different classes. On the contrary, the most religious in the US are the poor. This makes them passive and lazy, especially when their main enemy (republican reactionaries) have fooled them into thinking that their nationalist, fascist and theocratic ideas will help them.

Huh. Seems like it's also the middle class who are preoccupied with religion here. I'm not particularly religious and neither are my kids. But, my wife is. Every church I've been to through the years have always been full of middle-class parishioners. I usually see the parking lots full of cars. Many people dressed in their best Sunday clothes with some women dressed more like they're going to a club at Friday night.

I've actually looked for the poor and the homeless in churches. They're actually the ones who are missing most of the time. I've seen more poor and needy people congregate at charity events. It didn't matter if the event was sponsored by religious groups or not.

The only place where I've seen the poor masses congregate in churches were in the Philippines. I would imagine it's the same for other Third World countries.

All things considered, I guess life is alright.

I know I've complained a lot in my life, and I probably will continue to from time to time. But hopefully I don't do it nearly as much as I used to.

I don't have to worry about a lot of things. I'm sitting here in my bedroom, on the computer, with a bottle of iced sweet tea. It might not make up for all of the crappy stuff, but I'd say it's fair enough. I don't gotta worry about surprise buttsecks or contaminated/little water constantly, and nobody is standing outside of my house with a loaded gun pointed at me. Some people out there are probably putting up with one of those things right now, and that's unfortunate.

So maybe America has a messed up society. But it's working somehow, all things considered.

A bunch of crooks stole all your wealth and treat you like slaves. You are all owned, your social security numbers are a receipt of your enslavement. I could spell out exactly why the U.S. is so messed up but most of you are too dumb to comprehend complex ideas that challenge your reality. Racism is purposefully there, anything to divide you all against each other. Whatever keeps you focused away from the real problem, the people fucking you over every day. They meet in secret and when people provide photographic evidence nobody believes it, you're all a bunch of slaves. Enjoy being used as a commodity.

Disagree? Try reading some more books and spending less time submersed in media, the whole system is there to program you into little zealots that stand in line to spend your money on the tools of your own enslavement.

@magicalclick: But should it be our responsibility to essentially serve as the worlds police, especially considering we have all these problems in our own country? And American interventions aren't always altruistic as you seems to think; we have a long history of foreign military actions designed to further our own agenda. Even when we had good intentions, there are often times consequences from our actions that worsen the situations. A good example of that is the Iraq invasion.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good things about this country and any criticism I have is just trying to make it better and live up to the ideals of best of America.

Nope. I'm sure no one wants the US to be the world's police. I'd like to see the US abandon it's overseas bases and concentrate on domestic issues. But, if the US withdrew from that task, someone else is going to fill that void. Would everybody else prefer if Russia, China, or ISIS filled that void?

I like America, they help keep Canada safe so us Canadians can do important things like play hockey and drink beer and tell each other that we're superior to Americans.

Considering Otto Frederick Rohwedder of Davenport, Iowa, USA invented the first loaf-at-a-time bread-slicing machine. You're spot on!
