Hello guys I am 17 years old and I am now entering college, I am like "starting a new phase on my life" and I would like to start wearing suits (it's actually a thing I have been loving to do for some time ago).

What do you suggest guys?

Like.. wearing suits everywhere? Might as well throw a MLP Shirt and fedora on.

No, just going to college.

Ah, I remember being young and enjoying wearing suits.

#5 Posted by lamprey263 (22878 posts) -
no, you might be too young to afford them though, I don't think the kids at college are going to care... well they might care, they'll wonder why you're coming to class in a suit

You want to wear a suit to class?

to class?

You aren't too young to wear suits, however, the only time I really 'dressed-up' for any college classes was when I had to give presentations or speeches, otherwise I just wore stuff that fit the dress code - usually jeans and a tshirt or sweatshirt.
#9 Posted by Ricardomz (2329 posts) -

I like to be well dressed and a t-shirt and jeans just don't fit enough for me.

don't wear a suit to class

Only if they're cool suits :p

lol you are entitled to wear whatever you want but it will likely look rediculous. And most kids think it's cool to dress up until they start doing it regularly (ie: a job). Then the magic of a suit wears off fast.

Nothing wrong with wearing a collared dress shirt to class, a full suit with a tie & jacket is a bit much though.
#14 Posted by Pirate700 (46465 posts) -

Also, in college, I'd say anything more than basketball shorts, a tshirt and flipflops is overdressed when the weather is still warm.

#15 Posted by Mikey132 (5101 posts) -

If you can borrow a few suits from Don Cherry those would be good to wear to class.

#16 Posted by Ace6301 (21388 posts) -
Suits aren't about age as much as they are about build. That and when and where. Being the only guy in a suit doesn't make you classy, it just makes you "that guy in a suit".
#17 Posted by gamerguru100 (10463 posts) -

Nah, you have to be 18. :P

#18 Posted by Stinger78 (5826 posts) -
I guess that's the difference between us, TC, because I tend to have a more introverted type of personality where I don't like to be the center of attention. But, hey, if you want to be the 'suit guy' mentioned in the post by Ace6301, then go ahead :)

I think this is fairly relevant:

Please don't be that guy.

I'm not buying a fedora. Ok I get your point, I'll think about it. Thanks for your opinions.

Why would you want to wear a suit? I have one for interviews but that's it. I've worn it like 6 times I think in the year I've had it.

This. Maybe when you get to Business or Law school you can go all out.

Don't let the slobs deter you.  Good fashion sense nowadays is underrated.  If you want to wear a suit fine, you will stand out a bit in it but haters gonna hate.

Maybe get a nice hat to go with it.

Thinking it's stupid to wear a suit to class doesn't make you a hater...

#28 Posted by lamprey263 (22878 posts) -
so what exactly are you going for? like a business suit kind of thing like the douchey guys that sell cell phones or the latest MLM crazes, or like a retro thing like a 50/60s London mod fashion revival? personally I think that latter sounds cooler. tumblr_m75n0p8cqn1r8xgabo1_500.jpg plus they rode Vespa's those are fun to scoot about on

lol, I think he will but some people need to learn the hard way. After his 1st day of college he will probably quit, I just hope he doesn't waste money buying something like 5 suits he won't after the 1st day.
#31 Posted by nooblet69 (5162 posts) -

Suits are just for special occasions imo. Also if your really overweight or work at a bank / mafia I guess its acceptable.

Casual suit is the way to go. Button up shirt with a blazer and no tie. Do that and you're looking classy.

Even a blazer would look weird on campus.

I've seen guys in college that wear suits, it's not unheard of. One instructor as this guy in a suit if he was going anywhere, he said no, he just liked dressing like that. Just do what you want TC.

I'm sure if he's attending Harvard, Oxford, or Princeton he'll fit right in.

Yes, the goddamn business and law students that are forced to wear them.

I have a friend going to Cornell and of the pictures I've seen everyone just dresses in jeans and t shirts like most college students.

Actually no, I wasn't referring to them. Did you read the rest of my post? A few guys like to look classy, just like how some like to look like trash, emo, goth, etc.

Wearing suits to class isn't classy. It's weird.

College is the last time in your life when you can dress as dumb as you want and nobody will bat an eye.

#47 Posted by Mafiree (3704 posts) -
If you want to dress nicer I'd go with dress pants and sportcoats vs just plain suits. Much more versatile and wouldn't look out of place.
#48 Posted by Yangire (8787 posts) -

Gell back your hair and smoke some high quality cigs in class too.

#49 Posted by leviathan91 (7763 posts) -

No but it's not necessary and inappropriate for school (unless some project requires it). Wear a suit for formal events, funerals, or job interviews but for college? If you want to dress nice for college, wear khakis and a collared t-shirt and make sure it's comfortable especially during the summer. Other reason not to war a suit is due to the heat.

Also, there are different types of suits each suited for a different situation which you should look up on Google. You're not too young to wear a suit but it's not appropriate unless the situation warrants it.

Being a 17 year old boy who wears a suit to class every day is as weird as a 40 year old man who wears a graphic tee, basketball shorts and Vans to weddings.
