Age of consent, what should it be and why?

first, most people disregard age of consent more than age of drinking, so making it 18 is cool since unobedient people would disregard it anyway, but obedient people will listen

If it was like 14 as you said, people would much more likely engage in sexual activity

also not like there's that many people having underage sex

how do you know this? if you think this is true you be dead wrong. there many kids having sex your not going to be able to stop it. your just going to have to hope for the best they used protection.

Back then in the 1600s and 1700s i dont think there was an age of consent so people in their late 20s, 30s and 40s they had relations with younger girls at 13 or 14

Age of consent should be lowered here in the U.S. since kids these days are getting more sexual and able to get drivers licenses quicker than older people or whatever.

Age of consent here is 16. However, like the age of drinking, no one really cares unless it's like a 40 year old doing a 14 year old ...

Yup. Biology has decided this for us already. Onset of puberty should be the age of consent.

In all honesty it should b 12. Kids know what sex is at that age and should be able to do it without worry. Hell my cousin was banging chicks when he was 8.

It's interesting that 20% of people polled are saying 12-13 or no law whatsoever. That's 1/5 people who responded!

I think there have been some good arguments made, and there's no real clear answer one way or the other. A lot of people seem to say that young people should only be having sex with young people... but I wonder if society would be better off if teenagers were allowed and encouraged to seek more mature individuals for romantic exploration. Kind of like when you learn to drive, you have to drive under the supervision of someone who knows what they are doing. Or when you are training for a trade you work under someone who is experienced.

I just looked it up as a result of your post. Being presumably from a country where it's much higher, you might think it's a ridiculous age of consent or something. That doesn't mean they don't have one.

edit: 13 is the federal law. Apparently "prefecture law" usually takes precedence, and that raises it higher in most places. I'm not going to act like I know much about the Japanese governmental hierarchy, because I don't.

You have to be 16+ with parent consent. 18+ and it's your choice. That's what I think.

You have to be 16+ with parent consent. 18+ and it's your choice. That's what I think.

16 but I would personally wait till 18 because if you have sex any younger you have to deal with your parents if they find out and if I had sex before 18 I would be eaten by guilt so badly I would eventually lose the ability to sleep until I confesed, that's what happend to me with porn.
