In old testament law the punishment for a man who raped and impregnated an unmarried woman was he had to marry her and pay the father a dowry (only if she was a virgin would the dowry apply I think). I don't see why you're rolling your eye's at a very factual statement. The US put the current Afghanistan Government in place and look at how much progress they've made in terms of civil rights, wealth and education; the progress made is minute is case you didn't understand.

As for the topic, the Middle East is always going to be a place of barbaric actions and poverty so I'm not the least bit surprised. With that being said, we shouldn't judge their culture based on some isolated incidents.
