I'm surprised TC thinks this goes to far, I'd of thought he was one of those conservatives that thought the country was founded on Christian principles back when Jesus Christ brought his AR15 to America to smote the dark skinned savages in order to promote low taxes.

lol unconstitutional. you swear on the bible in a court of law. how is that for unconstitutional? and with a name like the apostle i'm surprised you see this as a problem.

You don't have to swear on the bible at all. In fact there are whole sects of Christianity such as the Quakers who are fundamentally against swearing to god. Ever heard of affirming?

#7 Posted by MrGeezer (55942 posts) -

Also, even ignoring the constitutional issues, wouldn't it make more sense to choose a book that was actually written in the state (or by an author who resides in the state)? I realize that Louisiana ain't exactly what comes to mind when people think of literary relevance, but surely they could find SOMETHING that they could actually call their own.

Still, if you refuse to it won't matter the principle of doing so. Before a "jury of peers", who are just simpletons of whom statistically nearly half believe the earth is less than 10,000 years old, not swearing on the Bible might be legal suicide for a defendant.

What confuses me in that article is I saw a couple good reasons NOT to make it the state book. I didn't see a good reason to make it the state book though. Did I miss something in there?

if it was the state book, maybe it would get dissected more and people would see it for what it really is

#13 Edited by lamprey263 (22452 posts) -

You know what, I say let it become the official state book, for laughs at least. I mean the state ranks among the lowest for literacy and higher education, so to have an official state book is worth a chuckle or few, and the Bible to boot.

Truman Capote is from Louisiana...but that's about it lol. Most of the South's authors come from Mississippi.

The American mid-west is becoming the new South.

And you can't paint the entire region with the same brush. Just because there is a majority electing these idiots doesn't mean there isn't a large number of people who don't agree with them.

Speaking as an atheist, I would likely not have weighed in on this, but at your request I suppose I can be riled up enough to grace you with my opinion. You are welcome.

I don't see the big problem, personally. For two reasons.

Firstly, it is not clear that recognizing a religious book as a "state book" necessarily indicates respect for "the establishment of a religion," unless it is accompanied by implicit support of the underlying religious teachings of said book. I would argue that having "In God we trust" on our money should be seen as unconstitutional, but having the Bible as a state book should not. In fact, though I don't think anyone has a state book yet, if one were to choose a state book the Bible should be afforded the same opportunity as any other book. Government should be religious-neutral agnostic. It isn't currently, but it should be. We shouldn't categorically exclude books on religious grounds in my view. Let the people vote. Then when they choose Twilight, shoot everyone in the state and import some people from somewhere more civilized to do the next round of voting. If it happens that they pick the Bible, so be it. It is a book, after all.

Secondly, as fiction goes, the Bible is not my favorite, but it's far from the worst. It reminds me a bit of ASoIaF, with the dark themes, the willingness to kill off main characters, and the refusal to give in to a strict black/white distinction of good and bad, where even the supposedly good protagonists can do some pretty horrible, terrible things. There's that one despot in the book, what's his name, Yahweh I think? According to some perspectives in the book this king of kings is a benevolent ruler, but the truth of his villainy is revealed to the reader as he tortures, kills the family of, and steals the land and property of one of his citizens, just to brag to a rival about how complacent his populace under such hideously tyrannical reign. That's one nasty dude. Even the most die-hard moral relativist would call that guy evil. And yet his son ends up becoming a perspective character later on in the novel who argues for peace and harmony and blowjobs for all or whatever. Then--SPOILER ALERT--that perspective character ends up being executed under a law written by the father. What a twist! I loved it. The author later on brought him back like Bennett did with Spock, which I thought was a pretty wimpy refusal to commit, but I guess he wanted to avoid having everyone whine and moan at him on Twitter about it. Anyway it's still much better fiction than Harry Potter or whatever it is you kids are reading these days.

I hope we've found some common ground here, my religious friends.

Liberal/socialist/progressive/pigs (take your pick) are not the ill of American society, they are the bane of all the greatness America has achieved. You are destroying this once great country form the inside out, period. You have taken a country that used to value hard work, ambition, Christian values, peace through superior firepower with a strong military, true Ellis Island style immigration and turned it into a homosexual, pot smoking, anti-Christian, lazy welfare ridden give me my entitlements, rich hating, weak military, terrible foreign policy, illegal immigration embracing piece of shit. LOL, that's so cliche. It's like you distilled every anti-liberal talking point from Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh into one post. Well done.

Why would I have any faith in the ability of "true Americans" to take back this country, when they've already let us liberals take it over and ruin it? Either you guys sat back and let us ruin the country (which makes you out to be pretty apathetic), or you tried to stop us and we won.
