This just seems so barbaric, the way they are killing those whales just seems wrong, and the people that participate seem to be having a blast cruelly slautering these precious animals.

Now i eat meat, ive even worked in an abattoir so ive seen animals from being alive to coming down a conveyer belt in bits, but those animals are slaughtered humanely not hacked and slashed and stabbed to death.

Now I'm not a animal rights activist but i don't like to see any living thing suffering unnecessarily.

Is it really necessary to continue this savage tradition against such beautiful intelligent animals?

I'm no animal rights activist either, but I think whales should be protected and off any hunting list. They're very intelligent animals and it just seems completely wrong. Can't they kill off wild boars or toads or something like that?

Yeah stuff like this really turns my stomach. I have no problem with eating meat either but I firmly believe in treating these animals as humanely and ethically as possible. I also think that extra care should be taken to protect endangered animals.

This sucks worse knowing that whales are one of the more endangered category of animals on the planet.

You do relies that Whales are still endanger species right? If I was gonna kill an animal, it will be for food only, not for fun & games.

@davillain-:

Pilot whales aren't endangered. In fact, depending on the species, not all whales are endangered.

Also, while they are hunted for sport and tradition, they're also hunted for sport.

So again, what's the issue? All animals are intelligent and they're eaten.

"According to the MarineBio Conservation Society, pilot whale population numbers are unknown, but they are “not considered endangered.” The animals have been hunted for their meat, bone, oil, and for fertilizer. Pilot whale meat is among the key products bought and sold by the locals in the north Atlantic islands."

So what is the basis of this indignation and outrage? The way they're killed? Or is it because the many are fond of them? Get a grip already.

Why?

This is a old tradition and are highly monitored and governed to make sure that it´s does not hurt the species , and also everything of the whale is being used.

So i do not see a problem.

Well... Guess I can say that it's not a danish tradition and they're not danish as much as they're under danish juristiction. Think of them as danish citizens with their own culture and traditions. They have the exact same rights as any "pure" dane, but they're partially automonous and will explicitly refer to themselves as... F.. Faroes?? Færinger!

The wiki if you're interested.

Also, as far as I'm aware, it's not really any worse than what transpires at typical animal farms.

This is just unacceptable because whales are endangered. If they are able to spend money and farm whales, I am ok. But they are shitty freeloaders.

There are many different types of whales. Some endangered, some not. Pilot whales (which are the ones hunted in The Faroe Islands) are not endangered.

They are hunting for resources. The estimates on populations vary wildly and are not proven to be endangered.

Being from Canada, where we beat baby seals to death in order to maintain an un-explosive overabundance of them, I couldn't care less what the Faroese do with their whales.

Plenty of hunters get sick satisfaction from making their kills. At least they aren't doing it to other humans.

I find it interesting that the campaign to draw attention to the whale slaughter seems to be championed by Russia Today, and that it appears to include a concerted attempt to promote a boycott of Danish tourism and industry.

Also, note that the whale slaughter is neither a new event nor a rare one: The news items describe it as an "annual event", leading one to wonder what's special about this year's slaughter. After all, I doubt that it differs much from previous years' slaughters.

There's a context, of course, and that is the worsening relationship between Denmark and Russia, stemming in part from NATO's Russia-baiting and more particularly from Denmark's declared willingness to contribute Danish naval vessels to NATO's "missile defense" system.

This March 22 story in International Business Times describes the heated rhetoric between Russia and Denmark, which included a warning by the Russian ambassador to Denmark that Russia might target the Danish navy with nuclear missiles.

Needless to say, I support the Russians. This is only the beginning of the payback that Russia will mete out to the Danish poodle, even as it tries to snuggle ever more deeply into Obama's fetid lap. :-P

I believe if certain animals are killed for food then that's completely fine with me, if it's for other reasons like to make shoes/clothing from their skin or for simple hunting reasons I don't support it.

Seeing families gathered round like it's a community bonfire, when the sea is literally red with the amount of blood released, like something from the Wicker Man.

I like how they say they are doing this properly and not harming the whale numbers, when they literally don't know how many whale are alive in the wild.

There isn't actually a difference between the killing of cows, chickens, and other animals.

Back in the old "cave man times", killing animals for clothing was TOTALLY necessary bro dude, not so necessary nowadays though.

Absolutely disgusting. Can't believe stuff like this still goes on... You can only imagine what other animals would think of us as a species and how we treat them, if they had the ability to do so.

@ariabed: Yeah probably... but the sad thing is we have the intelligence and awareness to be better than that. But I think it all comes down to a fundamental mentality in human nature that all other animals are here to serve our needs...

A man's gotta eat, but a man ain't gotta eat animals.

Furthermore, even if we accept that a man's gotta eat, let's also accept that a man's gotta wear clothes.

So, whether you eat the animal or wear the animal, let's admit that both clothing and food are necessary. Furthermore, let's admit that we can get clothing and food without (directly) killing animals.

Dolphins, for one.
