You actually use it quite a bit. I'd say you have to use it about 10 or so times through the whole game. You have to blow into the mic to solve some puzzles and about 2-3 times you have to shout into the mic for various reasons.
...the mic is the stupist gimmick in DS video games. I wish designers wouldn't use it. It's dumb if you're at home, and it's even more stupid when you're on a bus, trying to get past a level, just to discover you have to yell at your handheld like an idiot.

You could always just blow into your mic... Looks as though you are trying to get some dust off in public, not that abnormal. Anyways, so far I have used it about six or so times, mind you I have not completed the game yet.
Like 5, it doesnt dramatically change the game experience or puzzle you in any way, cause you are told when to use the mic, it exists to remind you a mic is there, have not played any friends online so idk if it has voice chat.
