Super Mario 64?

I just heard about this game. I want to play it, but was wondering if I need to play Super Mario 1 to 63 first.

No not at all. They're not all in chronological order. If you want to play them in order in terms of the story then I'd recommend to play Super Mario 69 first.

I thought Super Mario 69 convoluted the storyline a bit.

I preferred Super Mario 12, kept things simple and concise

Just stay away from New Super Mario 64. They changed the music and the bomb-ombs dance.

I think Super Mario 128 was just too far ahead of its time.

Yeah, twelve got rid of the "Bowser is Mario's real father" storyline. I thought it had potential after the reveal in 7, but they killed it with Bowser and Birdo's romace flashbacks.

Bowser is Mario's father?! Thanks for spoiling it!! Not everyone has played Super Mario 7, ya know!

I always felt that Super Mario 63 was underrated. Mario loses a lot due to his worsening shroom addiction. Most of it takes place in his mind, where he slowly works on overthrowing his dependence. Real deep stuff, lots of dialog. Super Mario 64 is a direct sequel, so I recommend playing 63 first. It helps explain why Mario doesn't eat so many shrooms in 64.

No, this person thought it up and then took the time to make a new thread about it and now has their stupidity immortalized for all time. We can all look at this and say "Chad, Chad wasn't a bright boy, this is the sort of thing that would cause him to chuckle"

I would play 1-63. Story is too complicated if you skip them. I love all the plot twists.
