I think the all-stars collection was fantastic, and made all of the Mario games up til that point better. I think the NSMB games have done a great job of preserving the spirit of the games and modernizing them, even if the presentation could be better. SMW had decent graphics and sound, and felt like a proper sequel of a sequel of a sequel. I actually think SM2 is the best of the NES games, which is funny considering that it isn't even a Mario game, but maybe I liked how different, refreshing and trippy and exotic it all was - being able to play as Toad and Peach also helped. 3 was great, but unfortunately I mentally put some of these other games before it. SMB 1 and its hard sequel are classic and groundbreaking games, but I actually don't think they're the greatest thing ever. I tend to prefer 2D Mario games, but that's probably because the 3D Mario games haven't evolved much.
Three-dimensional titles
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Galaxy
Super 3D World games
Comments:
Sunshine is my favorite 3D Mario game. It felt like it expanded upon SM64, and I thought the FLUDD pack added an interesting mechanic to the game, as did the goop you had to clean up with it. No other 3D Mario game since has really taken things to the next level in my opinion, instead I feel like they give you even less control. SM64 was decent, but to be honest I wasn't as big a fan as a lot of other people. It would be kind of low on my list if I were to combine both lists. I really didn't like Galaxy, I felt like it took us further away from the style of play 64 and Sunshine emphasized. And I think the 3D World games look downright crummy, taking things even further in the direction Galaxy introduced with bite-sized puzzle worlds.
