I dunno if its just me but does anyone else hate turn-based games? I mean the story lines are always good and the graphics are usually good too. but the idea of allowing myself to get hit during battle when it would have been so easy to avoid it had i gotten the chance makes me so angry. and then theres waiting to get hit, watching all the players on the field get hit one by one is nerve wracking...and choosing defence all the tyme gets anyone nowhere slowly. sometymes i find myself getting a turn-based game just to see if it will change my mind. but none of them do. after one battle i remember its a turn-based game and its only going to get worse...

He means your standard RPG.

I grew up playing RPGs on the NES/SNES and have always had a soft spot for them, but there's so many out now it's hard to determine which ones are worth buying and which aren't.

Most RPGs try to be really complicated with their customizations. I like a solid simple RPG like Dragon Quest 8 for the PS2, or any old ones like FFvi or Earthbound.

Slow turn-based battles I hate, but fast ones are okay. Something like Persona 3, you have the rush option, and even without it, the battles go quickly. Blue Dragon also has that thing going where you can just avoid encounters but still get exp.

What I hate is RANDOM ENCOUNTERS, now that is just annoying.

I like turn based games like Advance Wars, Fire Emblem and the like. If you're reffering to only RPG's that are turned base. I usually get so bored I resort to spamming the A button.

its probly just you. and in games like fire emblem and such, if your evasion/defence is high enough, you wont even take damage. its all about strategy, and choosing which units to attack with whom.

I like DQ8 so much! It's the best RPG I have beaten.(and FFIX)

No. I love them (except the TB battling in Final Fantasy X).

I especially love turn based strategy RPGs.

Random encounters are the worst youre trying to beat the game and your walking along trying to get to your next destination but some goblin steps in your way and you kill it well then the OTHER goblins get mad and they attack you too and pretty soon you cant take two steps without running into some monstrosity Oh the goblin thing was just a way to explain random encounters ive never played an RPG that had goblins attack you.

I do not mind either type actually. I play them both with no problems. Dragon Quest titles have been a huge turn based series and they are great games and games like Star Ocean and Kingdom Hearts are also favorites of mine. I do not care which method of battle system is used as long as the game is good.

I am also a great fan of turn-based games. But I'm not saying that it's odd for a person to like such kind of games. Some people probably view and drink in all the game details in a different way. For some, watching that character attack after you confirm your command is enough to immerse the person into the game world.

Its a RPG, which means it has roots in taking turns. Even in WRPGS, the characters are still taking turns, it's just streamlined and dependant on several other factors.?

Think about it this way, if you were given full license to defend, then surely your enemy should have the same right? That sounds a little too hard.

i grew up playing and loving turn-based RPGs, but after playing Guild Wars on my PC, I just can't go back to turn-based or random encounters... In fact, I despise random encounters much moreso than turn-based combat. I mean, Paper Mario has turn-based combat, but not random encounters, and I can bare with that. But it's just so much more fun to me to have an action-RPG like FF12, as long as the combat is fun, like Tales of Symphonia.

Random encounters can suck, especially when there's an in-game necessity to grind for money and exp. But things like an awesome magic or class system, or an amazing combat system (like the Gambit system of FF12), instantly allow me to overlook the fact I'm grinding. And it's then fun to do so. Many people seem to not like FF7 because of how much grinding you have to do, but I've played through that game like four times and I've never felt that way. Probably because I was having so much fun.

I don't care for turn based games either, too slow paced for me. I did like FF7 and all but the computer controlled battles were so annoying. I like to see the enemy and possibly avoid them if I can.

No I don't like turn based games either unless they make the attacks flashy enough for me to be in awe while i wait for attacks. If it isn't like that for a turn based game thenI feel like im in an oldwar where people stand in a line and take turns killing each other...

It hardly bothers me if it's turn based or not. I do prefer that it wasn't, like I would rather play Age of Empires on the PC, rather then the turn based DD verison.

Lol, am i the only one who noticed that this topic was created at 2007? Some white mage trainee has been practicing. Ahem... but anyway... I don't mind turn-based rpgs much, if they are fast-paced (ffta 2 was annoying because of slow battles and animations), through i dislike turn based strategy games.

I don't hate turn-based but I like them a lot better when they have an Active Time Battle (ATB) system like FFIV and FFV Advance.

I don't understand how some of you don't think you are participating in the battle. What you do definitely affects the outcome. I love trying to see what the fewest number of turns in which I can defeat a certain enemy is. These battles are how you find out the characters' individual strengths and weaknesses! You kind of need to know that for the boss battles. And if you actually paid attention to what you were doing in the turn based battles, maybe you wouldn't have to grind to such a high level, either.

The Turn based battle system is my favorite kind of battle system because it gives me thinking time and it's not twitch based and can allow a lot of customization.
