For the Nintendo Network ID, post it in the Official Nintendo ID Exchange Thread. It will be added to the full list whenever the TC gets around to it. Feel free to look me up there and add me. Just add a note that you're from GS.
I haven't tried hooking up an external hard drive to my Wii U for a couple reasons:
I opted to get a Sandisk Cruzer Fit instead. It's so small that you won't notice it unless you're actually looking for it. I'm not sure how many games you're looking to get digitally. If you prefer digital, then a hard drive would be best for you. In which case, someone else on this board should be able to point you in the right direction.

The Wii U systems offer internal storage for game save data and downloadable software and you can expand the storage memory by connecting an external USB-linked hard disc drive.
To ensure maximum performance between your Wii U and an external storage device, we recommend using a hard-disc drive (HDD) with a dedicated power source (i.e., using an A/C adapter). Due to the wide range of external hard drives, usability and performance will vary.
We have found that the following external storage devices work with the Wii U system; these device(s) have been subjected to basic performance tests:

We will expand this list as more devices are confirmed to work with Wii U.
i don't download many of the AAA Nintendo games, but i have over 30 indie and VC on my Wii U, as well as my 100+ wiiware/wii vc games on a 32gb sd card. still plenty of room for more. but id rather have a disc of Mario or Zelda even, as well as anything 3rd party games, that i can trade after. I do have like 75 wii/wii u discs too.
