Unlockable characters in Mario Kart of late your thoughts

Now I don't know about any of you but since Mario Kart Wii I have found the character choices lacking I mean Baby Peach,Daisy,Baby Rosalina,Metal Mario,Gold Peach or whatever she's called just feels like lazy choices.

I mean throughout the Mario universe there are choices like E Gadd from Luigis Mansion,Boom Boom from Super Mario Bros 3, Magikoopa who was gonna be in Mario Kart 64 and one character that many Mario fans really like in the Mario and Luigi games Fawful.

I could name others and I know it doesn't really make to much of a difference but certain additions just feel lazy and bland choices where in other games in the Mario series have had big roles to play. I am just asking what do you think of the character roster in recent Mario Kart games.

I thought MK Wii did a pretty good job, I can understand your point with 8 though. I've always thought it would be neat for the big unlock to be some popular character from outside the franchise, kind of like what they did in punch out.
