Sakurai confirmed this back in August, but it's great to see a side by side comparison.

The outlines definitely makes Link more noticeable. Without them, Link can camouflage pretty well in front of that tree. Mario looks better without the outline.

Whether or not I prefer them will depend on the character and the stage background. I'll most likely have the outlines at the lowest opacity. I can't wait to see it in 3D (hopefully frames don't suffer too much).

My thinking is, I'll probably be toggling the outlines off and on a lot.

Imagine if there was a tree in the background and you were playing as Link. That could get confusing without outlines. At the same time, if you're playing on a really basic stage like the Battlefield then I assume most characters would show up pretty well and there might not be much need for outlines.

I do have a good question to pose though. If every character can have an outline, then what would Mr. Game & Watch look like with an outline? Methinks he might not make a return. o.o

Good to have the option since I assume some maps will make some players hard to see without the outlines.

We dont need the outline at all. Just have the "player 1" "player 2" icon above the character heads and we can be able to see the characters.

I never knew it was announced, but I kind of got the hunch that the outline effects could be toggled on and off since some 3DS screenshots were lacking the outlines while others had them...
