not bad....will wiiU do worse or better?

“Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is already in the hands of more than 2.8 million people worldwide, and the road ahead looks great,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Nintendo’s holiday software lineup is more than impressive, and our Amiibo figures start a new chapter in the world of Nintendo interactive entertainment. With so many great experiences available, this holiday season is going to be an amazing time to be a Nintendo fan.”

Yeah, I got that email from Nintendo this morning.

Confirmed failure.

The 3DS version was supposed to give Japan huge sales. For years we heard that the Japanese do not use the console and if it was on a portable it would sell double of what the console version does.

In it's first full week of sales the Wii version actually sold better than the 3DS version in Japan.

This is a disaster of epic proportions for Nintendo. Smash Bros was supposed to be it's life saver.

monster hunter 4 and new 3ds come out this saturday....mh is guaranteed another 3million. but new 3DS will be the real fail or success measuring stick.

Who knew that 3 million sales in the first month of release could be considered a "failure." ^^

Doubtless, it will sell even more as Christmas approaches and will likely maintain momentum similar to Mario Kart 7 in the following months. What will be interesting to see is how well the Wii U version sells in its first month.

???

Brawl reached 820,000 copies sold during January 28 - February 03, 2008. 1.07 million by February 10th. Smash Bros 3DS surpassed a million in a weekend.

This version should have never been made because money is bad for video game companies. /Jaysonguymode

Well. 3 mill isn't bad. And we still got the Wii U version coming.

Anyway, I'm worried. Not about the 3DS, but about the Wii U. I can't help but wonder if Nintendo have effectively diluted a huge system seller. I think there will be many people who would have gladly bought the Wii U for the new Super Smash Bros. game but ended up being completely satisfied with the 3DS version and therefore not bother. So despite the decent 3DS sales, I think it was a bad move on Nintendo's part to develop a 3DS version. It's the Wii U that needs saving after all.

The Wii U version will do worse overall, but better when taking into account the install base (a ratio between games sold and number of units sold).

It's a pretty smart move for Nintendo to release the 3DS version in Japan first and the Wii U version in North America first. The Japanese market doesn't care about consoles anymore, it's mobile devices and the 3DS they care about -- those are really great numbers for the 3DS version. I don't believe the Wii U will push a lot of sales this holiday unless Nintendo cuts the price the same time Super Smash Bros for Wii U is released. $199.99 Wii U would definitely push sales.

Not 3 million, 2.8m. Kinda disappointing since 1.5m is in Japan. I would've thought US would get 1m on its own, not 1.3m combined between US/EU.

It would be interesting if it exceeds Brawl's ten million copies.
