I must start off by saying it's always sad to see something that offers family fun come to a close.

The Wii Online Play has officially ended. All the fun with games such as Mario Kart Wii, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Mario Strikers: Charged are now offline only. I didn't mention Smash Bros because the online play in that game (unless you had a wired connection and were playing with friends within the same region as you) was not very good which was a major bust especially when that was the killer app for the console.

It affects me some because me and my older brother used to play Call of Duty World At War all the time. Even moreso than the new COD games. However this has also prompted me to wonder a few things.

Do you think this will cause Nintendo or other Developers to do more unnecessary remakes just to add online play back onto games that had it last gen? For instance a World at War HD remake (which I would buy actually even if it's unnecessary).

The online play and leaderboards are unaccesible however the Nintendo Wii VC/WiiWare store still functions as normal.

What do you think about the conclusion of the Nintendo WiFi connection?

Do you think Nintendo should have kept it up or was this a suitable outcome?

One of the reasons I didn't buy multiplatform games on my Wii, great machine, but it wasn't my number one destination for online gaming.

Sad for those that did enjoy it though, especially considering the Wii was the LAST console to release (of the big three) back in December 2006. It also sold the most units, but for whatever reason their Wifi got turned off first out of the big three consoles.

Last out of the gate, first to quit.

It's disgusting

Nintendo screwed everyone who supported them.

Pokemon gamers will be hurt the most

It's disappointing, but we'll move on. There are games outside of Nintendo that were also affected by Gamespy's shutdown.

It's a little bit sad. I remember tearing it up on Pokemon Battle revolution and Mario kart.

Also now every time I play Sin and punishment it'll bug me when it asks if you want to upload your scores. :/

Yeah, it's pretty insane to think B2 and W2 which just came out a year ago no longer work online.

I wish it was up longer. I wanted to go back to the last story online, and I still played Mario kart wii and black ops sometimes.

I think its bullshit, a bullshit equivalent to capcom pulling the plug on Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii early. I can understand some of the older titles like Mario Kart DS and Metroid Prime Hunters but everything? Terrible move by Nintendo...

Mario Kart was such a blast. But its a part of evolution. Many of their titles was supported for years. Its too bad that the servers couldn't have been moved to a different place. But it may motivate people to get a Wii U.

It's sad, but completely understandable.

It's unreasonable to expect a company to maintain servers for old games not too many people play anymore, especially when Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros are around the corner, and those two games will clearly require a lot of processing capacity.

I just hope there won't be too many customers buying Wii/DS games thinking they have online only to find out the servers have been shut-down. I know the company is printing games without the Wi-Fi logo, but there are plenty of old copies out there.

I think is what nintendo wants. They figure their loyal customers will just go and out and buy a wii. I've been resisting. But I think i have to finally invest in one.

You can still play plenty of old school PC games online. Console gaming is awful in regards to the longevity of any game with online capabilities. I think the worst thing about these closures is just never knowing when companies will pull the plug.

This affects my DS moreso than Wii even though I hardly use them anymore. Sad that I'll never snake in the Yoshi Egg on MKDS online ever again. Snaking... so awesome. :D

And yea, @Jaysonguy is right, Pokefans will probably be hurt the most.

It's sad, but not something I'm going to lose sleep over.

The only thing that bugs me is that I can never play Mario Kart Wii online again. Did a few online races last week as a sort of goodbye, and I had a great time. I hope Mario Kart 8 can fill this gap.

I think it was the wrong move to make and was done far to early, still plenty of games on the Wii that have/had a decent online presence. Really bad move and some great games are going to be totally hollowed because of it.

Wii online was mediocre at best. I had a blast with Goldeneye and Mario Kart, though. It had to go at some point. A shame for those who were still using and enjoying it.

Indifferent on the matter, to be perfectly honest. I've come to the realization that online gaming as a whole isn't my favorite way to play a video game, and while I had some fun moments with a few online Wii titles, mostly Mario Kart and Naruto, I can't say I'll miss playing them with other people I knew only barely, at best. That's from the Wii point of view, though. It stings a bit more with the DS, given the Pokemon games and those giveaways that I could hardly keep track off. It's a shame I won't have the chance to experience those things at all now, but I was barely unable to take advantage of the few offerings I received when the game was online.

Ultimately, this doesn't really affect me. It doesn't do anything to hurt my Wii experience at this point, nor does it do anything to convince me to get a 3DS or Wii U to keep experiencing Nintendo's online gaming experiences. Heck, I don't even have online access at home at the moment, and I can't say I'm bumming out over not being able to use my other system(s) online, either. I suppose this is more a reflection on my disinterest in online gaming than Nintendo's decision to axe the online modes, though. :P

they had no choice...the servers were bought out by another company....they would have had to release a patches for all the games to have them switch to another server.

wii is very bad for patches because of no harddrive.

tragic. Well, I can't play UMK anymore on the 3DS. No more mortal kombat matches. It was good while it lasted.

The only hail marry I can hope for is for an announcement from Ed Boon next month about another 3DS version, which is not a guarantee of any sort.

Sucks. I wanted to play the Conduit online again but, I heard that they shut the servers down to that game way before Nintendo shut down their servers so, I think I was screwed out of playing it online a long time ago.

This is just for Wii and DS since they use Nintendo Wifi Connection for online play. WiiU and 3DS online are still up and running because they are on the Nintendo Network.

Well it was obvious one day it would happen and it will for 360 and PS3 too. Sad but those consol and the new gen wion't be as valuable as retro consol because you miss half if not more of the consol interest by cutting the online fonction.

Just like Splatoon ... that game is 90% online ... the day the WiiU online is dead, that game won't Worth anything, especially if you can download all the update to make it enjoyable and if they never offer the online mode offline well ... it will be quite shit.
