There is a timeline, but it is implied rather than told. There are "true" legends and obscure history in real life that may or may not have happened, but its still a relatively simple task when it comes to putting them in a time frame. So, even if the Legend of Zelda games are deliberatly obscure and mythic, then there still might be a chronology.
There is firm evidence that the games are linked, besides the obvious sequels like Zelda 2, Phantom Hourglass, Majora's Mask, ect. For example, in the prologue to A Link To The Past, it describes very clearly the end of Ocarina of Time. Thats just one example, but there are others.
Whatever Nintendo of America says, Im going to take key developer's in Japan's statements instead. If they say there is a timeline, I dont know why NOA would go against that, especially when its effing obvious anyway.
