As spoiler free as possible.... I was told that there is a secret involved in getting all the gold flags. My question is if there is any way to see which levels one has gold-flagged?

Yes, from the world selection screen you can see a little golden flag for each stage where you have accomplished it

To be exact, it's on the bottom right of the screen. Not sure which screen though, but it's pretty hard to miss.

Yeah you have to gold flag each level with both Mario and Luigi from memory.

I think only one of them needs to get the gold flag, but you need to beat the level with both of them.
