When I leave my Wii on standby (Powerlight is yellow), I hear static sounds from my TV set with a blank screen... Is this normal?

Then that would be your TV's fault

Is that what a channel does when it has no signal going to it?
The Wii cuts it's signal in standby or off mode

ic - thanks for the info - might be a thing with my HDTV... Also one more question - is it safe to leave the Wii on Standby (yellow power color) all the time when not using it with WiiConnect24 on? It doesn't wear the console down does it?

No, I've had mine since the US launch (Nov 19th) and I leave it on standby only.
It should get warm but not hot.

Turn your TV off when your Wii isn't in use and the static noise will stop... i guess... If you are not connected to WiiConnect24 and put the Wii to standby/off does the light not turn red... I don't know how it works as my WiiConnect24 has always been on.

Mine gets warm on standby mode. Nothing to worry about.
