So far I can only think of MK8 being the must have wii u title. Am I missing anything?

No Question Must Haves:
- Mario Kart 8
- Pikmin 3
- Super Mario 3D World
- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Other Ones Debate-ably Must Have:
- Lego City Under Cover
- New Super Mario Bros. U (and Luigi DLC)
- Nintendo Land
- The Wonderful 101
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
- Rayman Legends
Then there are other titles that multiplatform and are inferior on the Wii U, but could be consider a must have, such as Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Darksiders 2, etc.
There are some downloadable titles that are pretty good, but not must haves.
@ps4hasnogames:
Donkey Kong Country Tropcial Freeze: Its Retro Studio's all of their games are must have.
Windwaker HD: Its freaking Windwaker in HD...come on now.
Super Mario 3D World: While it doesn't beat Galaxy, it ties it. A very fun and solid Mario game.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate: Is a great game.
Pikmin 3: Its a Miyamoto game...like come on.
Mario Kart 8: Self explanatory.
That's about it. Some might add Wonderful 101 to that list, but I hated the gameplay of that game. Took me 7 months to finally get it done. I jept having to force myself back to it.
@trugs26:
I second that. Add in Injustice and Deus Ex among the must-have third party games. Those two have seen a lot of playtime on my system.
Trugs pretty much hit the nail on the head. Zelda is only a must have if you haven't played the original. Don't forget some of the virtual console classics either like SMB3, Earthbound, and Super Metroid.
ahhh, Earthbound, yes. Magical game.
1.) Super Mario 3D World
2.) Mario Kart 8
3.) Raymond Legends
4.) Pikman 3
5.) Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.
I just picked up a Wii U back in April. Mario 3D world is a must have. Donkey Kong Country and Sonic Lost World are fun games. If you have not played Zelda: Windwaker, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, or Rayman Legends, then get those titles as well. I hear Mario Kart 8, Mario Bros U, Pikmin 3, and Wonderful 101 are pretty good. Child of Eden, the NES Remix games, and Shovel Knight are also supposed to be great as well. The Wii U might have a limited library, but the games it does have are worth playing. I love my PS4 as well.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
I've logged over 1000 hours so far and still going strong. A must-have for sure.
Also, the above post saying multi-plats on Wii U are inferior is just wrong. For example, Darksiders 2 on Wii U is better than on PS3. I have it on both systems and the Wii U gamepad improves the game a great deal. I'm sure there are other examples as well.

Fair enough. I just said it to be safe because that's the general consensus out there (I actually haven't tried them on other platforms). Personally, I have Assassin's Creed 4 which is really good and the off screen play is really useful. To be safe I said inferior, but in reality, you'd probably get the same experience with Assassin's Creed or CoD. None of these games have anything particularly wrong with them, so they probably hold the core experience necessary.
I also have Darksiders 2, and can say it also runs really well.

Yeah, that never happened
The game doesn't run any better on the Wii U then it does on last gen hardware.
The Wii U does not win anything when it comes to multiplats
- Nintendoland (if you will play a lot of local multiplayer)
- Super Mario 3D World
- The Wonderful 101 (if you are into beat'em ups)
- New Super Mario Bros U
- Mario Kart 8
- Pikmin 3
- Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze
- LEGO City Undercover
- Rayman Legends
