A number of companies have banded together to form the Universal Stylus Initiative (USI):

Mission

Universal Stylus Initiative (USI) defines industry-wide standards for interoperable communication between an active stylus and touch-enabled devices such as phones, tablets, and computing and entertainment platforms.

Overview

USI is an organization of leading OEMs, stylus and touch controller manufacturers driving industry standards to promote interoperable active styluses with touch-enabled devices such as phones, tablets, and computing and entertainment platforms.

The primary feature of the standard being developed is to define the method by which the stylus communicates with the content creation devices. One of the goals of USI is to provide a standard user experience while making the active stylus more affordable and widely available in the market.

  • Wacom
  • Synaptics
  • SHARP
  • Lenovo
  • Dell
  • Waltop
  • Atmel
  • EETI
  • FocalTech
  • PENTECH

No news on whether or not N-Trig/Microsoft will be joining, but I'm quite interested to see what will come out of this, especially with so many major players already on-board.

We will see, so far MS and N-Trig has made the best pen and touch input on the Surface Pro lineup compared to other tablets, and third party crappy iPad stylus's that don't respond as close to paper and pen writing.

@FireEmblem_Man I don't know about it being the best, for some applications, such as drawing, Wacom is preferred. The Surface Pro 3's stylus is better for tasks such as note taking.
