Well this is no surprise, it has already hinted that Microsoft would announce a new successor to the Nokia Lumia 630 and it's variants (635 and 638). Also MS had the worst kept secret about a new successor of the Nokia Lumia 1320, the entry-level budget friendly Phablet which was announced about a year ago.

So, now with the new Lumia 640, it contains the following specs (Confirmed):

  • Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim
  • Windows 10 Ready
  • Colors: Glossy cyan, orange and white, as well as matte black
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM8926), 1.2 GHz quad-core processor
  • 5" HD (1280x720, 16:9) IPS LCD, 294 PPI, Glance screen, Corning Gorilla Glass 3, Sunlight readability enhancements
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8 GB internal mass memory + up to 128 GB Micro SD & 30GB free OneDrive cloud storage
  • Rear camera: 8 MP AF (3280x2464), f/2.2, 28 mm, 1080p @ 30 fps video (continuous autofocus), Flash: LED, Lumia Camera 5.0 (with Dynamic Flash, HDR)
  • Front camera: HD 1 MP wide angle, f/2.4, 720p video
  • Connectivity: BT 4.0, microUSB2.0, Micro SIM, A-GPS+GLONASS, BeiDou, DLNA, Screen cloning with Miracast, WLAN 802.11 b/g/n/
  • Sensors: Accelerometer, Magnetometer, Proximity, Ambient Light Sensor
  • Battery: 2500 mAh (BV-T5C) removable battery
  • Weight: 145 g
  • Size: 141.3 x 72.2 x 8.85 mm

As with the 640 XL, it contains the about the same specs as above but with some extra features (confirmed):

  • Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim
  • Windows 10 Ready
  • Colors: Matte cyan, orange and black, as well as both matte and glossy white
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM8226), 1.2 GHz quad-core processor
  • 5.7" HD (1280x720, 16:9) IPS LCD, 259 PPI, Glance screen, Corning Gorilla Glass 3, Sunlight readability enhancements
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8 GB internal mass memory + up to 128 GB Micro SD & 30GB free OneDrive cloud storage
  • Rear camera: 13 MP AF, 1080p @ 30 fps video (continuous autofocus), Flash: LED, Lumia Camera 5.0 (with Dynamic Flash, HDR)
  • Front camera: HD 5 MP wide angle, 1080p video
  • Connectivity: BT 4.0, microUSB2.0, Micro SIM, A-GPS+GLONASS, BeiDou, DLNA, Screen cloning with Miracast, WLAN 802.11 b/g/n/
  • Sensors: Accelerometer, Magnetometer, Proximity, Ambient Light Sensor, SensorCore
  • Battery: 3000 mAh (BV-T4B) removable battery
  • Weight: 171 g
  • Size: 157.9 x 81.5 x 9.0 mm

Expect more confirmation tomorrow! Yes, since acquiring Nokia's mobile phone division as well as the Lumia brand, MS has been restarting everything from Entry-Level phones to Mid-Ranges towards smaller markets as they know that they can't compete against High-End phones such as the iPhone 6 models, and all other Android Flagships (Galaxy S5, Note 4, Note Edge, LG G3, G Flex 2, HTC One m8 [even windows version], ect). A new flagship is coming this year, and of course MS will release it possibly late summer, but we won't see any news of it until Windows 10 goes to its final stages of development and the next Windows 10 conference. Click here for the speculated Lumia 940.

UPDATE: Both phones will be available for AT&T and T-Mobile as well as will be sold unlocked at a budget friendly price of $180 (640 w/dual-sim LTE) and $245 (640XL w/dual-sim LTE).

NOTE: Prices are only for Unlocked Dual-Sim LTE models and the carrier variants to be determined

@musicalmac Do you now see MS over taking Android's Low-end and Mid-range market with these 2 phones?
