I'm in the market for a new tablet. My short list consists of an iPad Mini or a Shield tablet. I'm leaning towards the Shield tablet. I want to use it for media consumption, Ebooks, and light gaming. Any thoughts?

Go for the Surface 3, that's coming soon, it's a full productive Tablet and it will upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge when purchased so it can stream from the Xbox One, or you can stream from a steam client.

Certainly interested in the surface 3 but its a bit larger than I want and with the $120 keyboard $620 is a bit more than I want to spend on a tablet.

@inb4uall

You'll ultimately have more game options on the iPad. And you'll have access to more digital book stores. And you'll enjoy better 3rd party hardware support. And you'll enjoy better media app support.

VLC Player is on iPad (reviews point that the iOS version is the most robust)

Chrome browser is on the iPad as well

If you need a keyboard, any cheap $10 bluetooth keyboard will do fine, or if you want fanciness, there are $30 keyboard cases or keyboard covers

Kindle, iBooks, and Nook are on it and, again, offer richer experience on the iPad

Microsoft and Google services are all on the iPad, with Microsofts entire offiice suite being better on iOS as well

And gaming. Well. It's unanimous that gaming is far better on the iPad. You have options for a gamepad style controller, and to livestream the gameplay to an HDTV via HDMI cable or wirelessly through Airplay

Tons more games and far better app support.

Decided on an Mini 2. looking at spec sheets I'm not sure what Apple changed between the 2 and the 3.

@inb4uall: The iPad Mini 3 picked up new color options, TouchID, and a 128gb storage option. Their performance however will be on par because they both pack a 64bit A7 SoC.

I wanted a black 16gb anyway. Glad to know I'm not missing anything important.

Possibly a bit late, but the ASUS T90 Chi ($299 USD) might be a reasonable option when it starts shipping in the coming weeks.

Specifications:

  • Intel Z3775 Bay Trail
  • 2 GB LPDDR3

  • Included bluetooth keyboard dock
  • Included active stylus

@NVIDIATI: He asked for a real tablet, not a low-tier device
