I remember thinking it was a little suspicious after the 49ers came back after the blackout to nearly win. >_>

So essentially, what he's claiming is that the NFL, a league which brings in nearly $10B every year and has each and every team turning huge profits, would risk its legitimacy, publicly embarrass themselves in front of 110M+ people, on a game that is going to be the most watched-event in America annually, regardless of whose playing, and delay it for half an hour just so that MAYBE a team down 22 points COULD POSSIBLY mount a comeback and get a few more eyes on television sets (that CBS had already paid to broadcast to, mind you) for another 90-120 minutes.  Seems legit.

Can someone explain how exactly the blackout gave the 49ers a significant advantage?

In retrospect people are saying it did things like "stopped the Ravens momentum" but both teams were on an even playing field after the blackout. The 49ers still scored on the Ravens multiple times to make their comeback, the blackout didn't magically do that.

I agree it was on purpose but not exactly to give an advantage for either team. It was a way to make more money for the league and teams involved. This was the SECOND game the 49ers participated in that was a nationally televised game that got suddenly blacked out. Remember the Monday night game against the Steelers?

I believe that this was a ploy to help the 49ers get their new stadium deal done and was a the test run for the SuperBowl.

With a black out, you get a delayed game. With a delayed game you get extra airtime. With extra air time you get more opportunities for advertising, more viewers, more concessions, more everything.

There's big money in televised sports, not just in advertising and sponsorships but where the real money is, in the numbers.

Look for it and it can be found.
