Mine's by far Batman: Arkham City. I loved the first one, but AC just left me stunned. Easily one of the best games of all time.

So what about you?

Assassin's Creed II, I really cared about Ezio and his quest to avenge his family.

Adventure game.... hmmm I can't really pick one, but I did enjoy resident evil 4/5, as well God of War series. Super Mario Galaxy 2!!! Oh yes that is one of my favorites this Gen.

For some reason I think you guys are talking about the "wrong" adventure games in here,I think the kind of adventure games this board is all about are the classic ones, the ones you folks are mentioning are better suited for the action/adventure board. :P And in that light,my favourite adventure game this gen is The Book of Unwritten Tales, followed by Dreamfall and Gemini Rue.

The Longest Journey and Dreamfall are two of my all time favourites. As for recent games, adventure game fans who haven't already tried To the Moon really should do themselves a favour and check it out! It's a truly heartwarming experience and I enjoyed every second of it.

I can't decide between Arkham City and Assassin's Creed II.

Both games have awesome stories, great and fluid combat and tons of optional quests to keep you occupied.

So I guess that's a tie for me. :P

If you can count Sonic Generations in here, i would choose that one. I'm being soo addicted to it :3 the most addicting game for me at the moment is Final Fantasy XIII-2 but that's an RPG instead of adventure.

Yes, you're right. Action-adventure games should be discussed in the board dedicated to them rather than here.

When I hear 'adventure game' I think more of esoteric puzzles, and wandering around picking up random items. As far as this gen goes, pickings are slim, but Telltale's Monkey Island series gets my vote. Keeping the spirit of the 80's/90's adventure games alive.

My favorites of the last five years or so would be Gemini Rue, Sam & MaxSeason 2, Machinarium and Jack Keane.

Tales of Monkey Island was good, too. Stacking was great fun as a non-traditional adventure (ie. not point-and-click).

Also, some of the fan-made remakes and sequels for Sierra's King's Quest and Space Quest series have been terrific.

Nothing beats the 1990s classic adventures, though. That was the Golden Age.

I'm playing Book of Unwritten Tales right now. It's beautiful and well-written with interesting characters but the gameplay just doesn't measure up -- easy puzzles and too much streamlining. :( That seems to be a big problem with adventures these days -- Telltale has gone that route with recent releases and it looks like others are following suit.

mine would be the longest journey and also its sequel dreamfall. not forgetting syberia series (1 and 2).

i'm so absorbed into the story of both franchise.

how i cared what happen to April, Zoe, and Kate.

the places they visited and how it eventually change their lives (like the decision Kate Walker made when she choose to follow Hans at the end of syberia 1, that was a powerful emotions)

i'm a bit sad that the sequel for both titles are put on indefinite hold..my wish that it will be publish in the near future..

ps: wow..realizing that its already been 12 years since i played the longest journey..its already that long..

Prince of Persia and GTA are action-adventure games, not adventure games.

The 'adventure game' genre means stuff like text adventures, graphic adventures, point & click games, visual novels, etc.

I really loved the Longest Journey and Dreamfall. Also, Syberia I/II. I haven't found a point and clicker in the last few years that has satisfied that itch. I haven't played To The Moon yet but it's on my list of must buys, will probably be my next Steam purchase. A couple of years ago I started playing through some of the classics I missed first time around (I didn't get my first PC until 2000). Of those, Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle are my faves.

Oh, and I've really enjoyed the Monkey Island reboots. Hopefully they will end up giving more of the classic LucasArts series' a similar treatment.

A lot of games getting name-dropped here which I wouldn't call "adventure" games, more like action-adventures.

Favourite adventure games would probably be Machinarium. It's beautiful, sounds great and has a really touching story for a game with no dialogue. Oh, and not forgetting L.A. Noire, if that does qualify (I think it does).

AleksandarTale

Well, Arkham City is a marvelous game but I wouldn't call it an adventure game. To me it is an action game.

I have played several new point&clicks in the past recent years and a handful of them were real good. I would say "Machinarium" was the most original one but I enjoyed " Secret File 1& 2" more. The last game I played was " A New Beginning" although a bit of too obvious enviromentalist propaganda, was a well made game. One of my all time favorite games is "The Experiment" I loved this game but it has been a while.

I have read this thread and am surprised as how few "adventure games" are mentioned.

action games, shooters and RPGs - a couple people did list a real adventure game.

I will mention mine - Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper.

Remember buying that a year ago. I remember i couldn't get passed a certain point, some kind of glitch. Didn't save for a while either and couldn't be bothered to replay all of it. Wasn't bad game though.

many adventure games have very difficult parts that are not really glitches but sections that you can not clear unless you do every little thing in exactly the proper order and you can't skip any item or do it out of sequence.

there are several that I had to give up on because I got stumped on a section or puzzle I was sure was unsolveable only to find out that a friend or two had finished the game a year or so before I bought my copy

It looks like quite a few quality adventure games have come out since I last wrote that post...

  • Cinders
  • Dear Esther
  • Journey
  • Katawa Shoujo
  • Robotics Notes
  • School Days HQ
  • Sleepless Night
  • The Walking Dead
  • Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

But I've only just barely tried out a few of these games, so I'm not sure whether these will be among my favourites just yet. Still, 2012 seems like it was a pretty impressive year for adventure games.

KS is more of a bishoujo type renpy  game - those are not generally listed with the rest of the adventure games because that type of 'adventure' is a rather specialized niche

it is something that it was finally completed after some 6 years though.
