I am sure this is old new but I just learned about it today when I went to gamestop. Apparently you have to be 18 years old to buy M rated games which are supposedly 17 plus. What is going on? ( I am 17 btw and outraged at this). What do you guys think?

It should be 17 and up but I think some stores want to cover their own asses by saying 18 and up...

They also said that it was going to be enforced everywhere starting in January.

Why? 17 and up should mean people 17 and up can buy it, not 18 and up (that's what AO games are there for).

yea, that makes no seance, ...or at least it must make seance to the ESRB, but who actually thinks like them. (cartoon violence, don't all games have some type of violence, except puzzle games)

i think its because some M games have nudity and they feel the need to boost it up an age lvl because of those games i dont see why they dont just rate those specific games AO and keep the system how it is

There is no age you have to be, legally. Some stores have policies, which can vary. While it technically should be 17, companies are stupid and may not always be the case.

Ultimately, it is up to the store's policy on the games. I have seen it requiring age 18 before, and I agree that it should be 17 if that is the rating, but I also feel that AO titles should be available in stores as well. In the future game sales will become more and more restricted until enough gamers are old enough to replace the pre-gamer generation.

In Europe, games display an age rating, not a general category, so things are a bit less confusing. For example, GTA is always 18+, and so is every other violent game. Some mature games, mostly horror games that are not too realistic in their depictions of violence, have a 16+ rating.

Yeah, it all depends ongovernment regulations. The european PEGI ratings are not legally binding, if there's no state law that prohibits their sale to minors. It's just there as a guideline.

The 'M' rated game, that I just glanced at, did state 17+. Did you provide a state id/ driver's license or just tell them that you were 17?
