I've been a retro gamer since as long as I can remember, I've been looking at picking up either a X360 or a PS3 mainly because of the prices I've seen lately for the consoles second hand £60/£70, the types of games I play are Sonic, Mario, OutRun, Gran Turismo and Crash Bandicoot to name a few, I was wondering if anyone could recommend which system to pickup and which games I should go for, (I'm not into violent games though), Cheers.

Got both, my son plays more PS3 than I, I play more X360 than him. As usual, when and if you are going to pick just one system it depends on which exclusives you prefer, the rest of the library is filled with multiplats, PS3 has a couple of advantages: on- line is free and PS3 games are always single discs, while many X360 games come in two discs.

I'd go with the 360. Some of the multiplatform games especially the early ones tended to perform better on the 360. I also preferred the exclusives on it more then the PS3 as well as the controller. Another great feature is the ability to copy the entire game on the HDD and run it off there.

I'd get the PS3 - 360 shines for a lot of early multiplats, but as a collector/retro-gamer I think you'll be focusing on the exclusives and PS3 has some really strong ones. It's also a good blu-ray machine, the hard-drive can be cheaply and easily upgraded, and multiplayer gaming is free

I have both and I prefer my Xbox 360. It generally has better versions of multiplats, a better controller, a better OS, a better digital marketplace, and a better online service.

If you are into Gran Turismo, PS3 is really your only option for that series. However, Forza is a worthy rival to that series on Xbox as well.

Personally I feel like Sonic has a better enviornment on X360. The controller is slightly reminiscant of the Dreamcast one if you are used to that at all.

Both are honestly great systems. I think it would boil down to which exclusive games you enjoy more.

I'd say PS3. X360 exclusives are more FPS & TPS shooters where as PS3 has more variety in exclusives. You like Mario? You got cute-creative platforming with the Little Big Planet series, you got some of the best off-roading racing with Motorstorm series, you already like Gran Turismo (which is only on Playstation), you got creative-competitive kart racing with Modnation Racers. You got fantastic adventure games with the Uncharted series, some wonderful action-open world games with the inFamous series. You got the fantastic multiplayer-battlefront like series with Warhawk and Starhawk. You got Twisted Metal if that's your thing or God of War if that's your thing (both series are a little more violent than I like). You can also get the definitive editions of some of the PS2 classics like Rachet & Clank, Sly Cooper and Jak & Daxter trilogies. PS3 rocks.

360 has better controller and most multiplats were slightly better.

However based on your game tastes the ps3 might suite you better.

There both cheap second hand why not both

Of the two, I've only owned a 360 and I thought it had some great games, but really bad exclusives. Halo and Gears of War are really online mp games, where it seemed so many of the PS3 exclusives had great exclusives that also were great single player stories.

So, PS3 and on top of that if it has a blu-ray. Unless you really, REALLY like HD-DVD it's not a bad choice.

They don't make a whole lot of games like Crash, Mario and Sonic anymore, but the PS3 does have Sly Cooper and a few Ratchet and Clank games you may enjoy. plus sonic Generations is good.

"the types of games I play are Sonic, Mario, OutRun, Gran Turismo and Crash Bandicoot"

PS3 offers more variety than the X360 and of the 3 last gen consoles it is the only one still getting exclusive games like Tales of series, Persona 5, Guilty Gear XRD, Yakuza 5, etc. all coming out this year (Guilty Gear came out on December). If you're into fighting games and Jrpg's then the PS3's definitely the better choice. But based on the kind of games you like the PS3 don't offer that many platformers beside maybe Ratchet & Clank?
