Particularly, I'm talking about Crysis 2 and Crysis 3. The orchestral score (done by the great Hans Zimmer) in Crysis 2 is absolutely terrific! some of the soundtracks like this one is a proof of how great the soundtrack is in the game. Not only is it utilized well in-game but it also sets up the atmosphere pretty well. And the main theme is just one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Crysis 2's OST is a beautiful piece of artistry.

Then we have Crysis 3 which was more of a musical joyride to me than the dystopia battlers that the previous Crysis were. And it was great! the constant light melodic music playing in the background helped the vivid feeling that only Crysis 3 had in the whole series. The music didn't just work as a background music but it also ended up on many people's playlists. Especially "New york memories" , you can't go wrong with that. I still listen to that soundtrack pretty much everyday and I can't love it enough. With soundtracks like "What are you prepared to sacrifice", "New York v2.0" and "New York memories", Crysis 3's OST is easily my favorite OST and the best one I've ever heard.

There might be better OSTs out there but these two OST's are just too damn under-appreciated. I've never seen a reviewer mention the soundtrack in both the games' reviews. In Crysis 3, it almost felt like that everything else was an after thought and music was the first priority (along with the gfx of course).

Share your thoughts on this underrated gem.

Cinematic/ambient background filler for the most part

I'm afraid but I'll have to disagree. I guess you didn't pay enough attention. Because that's what I did in my first playthrough, in my second one, I just kinda listened to the music the whole time without paying much attention to anything else.

Not me. When I play FPS games (and most games in general), I like to be immersed to the point I pretend it's me in the game. I want to hear the environment around me. I expect to hear the sound of destruction in a game with a lot of destruction and not an orchestra. But, that's just me. I still like the music to be included in the game in case I listen to it during some down time.

The one place where I like gameplay music is in racing games or games with driving sections. I listen to music while driving in the real world. There, it's okay.

I thought both Crysis 2 and 3 had great soundtracks. Loved that Mastermind Theme in Crysis 3.
