What do you mean how would many of todays games not exist?

It did give the player the freedom to do pretty much whatever they wanted, but is it really that much different from GTA 1 and GTA 2, other then being in 3D (sucessfully mind you)?

Games normally take ideas from other games in the same genre, like I'd call something like Wolf 3D a revolutionary game for popularising FPS's.

GTA3 isn't universally loved (it would be shocking if such a game was) but the massive success of the franchise (whiose megapopularity was kicked off by GTA3) indicates that there are a lot of people who think extremely highly of it.

2D and 3D game design are very different beasts (ask the Sonic or Castlevania teams) so the fact the 2D games were well designed doesn't take anything away from the 3D games.

I wouldn't call GTA3 the best of all time if only because its sequels (on console anyway) have improved upon it.

I would personally never consider GTA 3 or any GTA game even on the top 10 or even 20. It's not that good of a game. But it is influential. Maybe that's what the TC is touching on.

Influential and greatest game are two different things.

The mere fact that it was ecclipsed by Vice City and then even more by San Andreas makes it not the nest ever. When it first came out you could make that argument, but not anymore.

Here are my reasons. Don't know if they stack up with anyone else's, but whatever.

-Single player only. Automatic disqualification from "greatest game of all time" status with me.
-Very wonky control at times, constantly smacked of lazy "not giving a crap" development. I honestly don't think Rockstar saw all this commercial success coming.
-Tries to get by on its concept rather than its gameplay. Always an approach I have a great deal of disrespect for.
-Created, or at least helped to create the annoying new-school movement of players motivated by attitude over intelligence. You know the type - you can't seem to walk into EB/GameStop these days without bumping into one of the morons. Not saying all GTA players are like this, but it did herald in a new demographic that I sincerely feel gaming would be better off without.

Now, I'm not knocking GTA3 outright. It was an alright game for what it was, and at least an 8 by any set of reasonable standards, but I wouldn't even consider bringing it up in a "greatest games of all time" discussion.

Good reviews are typically for bad games or obscure titles.

Great games don't need reviews, your best friend will tell you its amazing!

Well, GameSpot included it in its Hall of Fame.

Fact is, Grand Theft Auto III was an extremely important and influential game. However, it was very quickly eclipsed by much better Vice City and San Andreas. The thing with Grand Theft Auto is that it's constantly moving forward which leads to fan vote dissipation regarding as to which one is best because each one is very different and unique. In my opinion, Vice City is hands down not only the best GTA, but the best game ever created.

Even though it is a very influential title it had a ton of control and gameplay issues. The mission design was relatively poor and the combat was mediocre at best. Running around blowing stuff up is fun yes, but in order to be considered "the greatest game ever" you need some decent game mechanics and mission design to back it up (considering the game is mission based).

I honestly couldnt even place it or any of the GTA games for that matter in my top 100 even. Im not saying they werent awesomely fun games to play but they are super repetitive at best. The combat has always been sloppy and disjointed. The graphics have always been average at least and substandard in some cases. The mission system if flunky and just doesnt feel tight. The entire experience isnt that well versed and is loosely wrapped overall.

Way too many other games that would get spots before gta would be considered.

i dont consider it to be the best of all time but it sure is one of the most revolutionary, just like how ff7 changed and set up the stage for future japanese rpgs, gta 3 did the same by evolving the once bland action open world concept into something most games use today, i know what your thinking, many rpgs have this, but it isn't the same open world concept that rpgs have, this evolved in being a street criminal in a large city, which wasn't as fun in gta 1and 2. most crime games use gta as their base of ideas, it safe to safe that gta is the most influental game of all time.

Really!??? The thing is most games now suck, and have hardly any thinking involed. GTA's tend to suck to honest, I used to love them.

Becasue it isn't. It was basically GTA 1 and 2, but in 3D. Don't get me wrong, the game is considered a marvel, and did a lot for gaming, but the fact of the matter is that many aspects of the game are absolutely not up to snuff. as stated earlier, the mission design was quite repetitive (I feel that's only gotten worse in the series), and the combat was sub-par, at best.

It was a great game, and I'll always love it as the best GTA, but its just not enough to call it the best game of all time.

But at least you didn't say San Andreas.

Well it's often considered one of the most influential games of all time. Hell, it's probably the single most influential game of that console generation. But being the first doesn't always mean being the best. Wolfenstein 3d is also one of the most influential games of all time, but I don't think anyone is ever going to refer to it as one of the best of all time.

DarkCatalyst

  1. The controls were fine, depending on the platform you were playing on. The vehicles all had their own feel to them. I thought they were very well done. I'm not sure if we were playing the same game.
  2. What exactly do you mean? So GTA didn't have strong gameplay and got by merely on concept? Again, I don't think we played the same game.
  3. Sounds like a veiled attempt to instigate a "hardcore vs. casuals" rant at first glance. Then again, every genre has those sort of groupies, so its hardly unique to GTA. Because of the nature of its content, GTA is more likely to get painted with such a stigma.
I'm not sure how GTA III could possibly be excluded from a greatest games of all time discussion. Not necessarily top 10, but most certainly top 100. If we can manage to put some mediocre Final Fantasy games in that list, then GTA III most definitely belongs in that mix too in terms of its contributions to gameplay and its overall effect on last gen's console race.

In certain aspects of production values, I'll give you that, but on a gameplay level, I fail to see how Vice City even resides in the same universe as San Andreas.

Even if San Andreas is superior in gameplay, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a better game - there's a lot more to games than just gameplay. The reasons why I consider Vice City better are the storyline, characters, setting, music, and unparalleled sense of styIe. Also, the game features some of the best and most imaginitive missions in the series and the most memorable moments in gaming, period. San Andreas sometimes felt too big for its own good and unlike Vice City it didn't have any meaningful side missions (Malibu, Film Studio...fantastic missions, yet completely optional). I was very glad to hear that Rockstar is getting rid of the 'dead space' in Grand Theft Auto IV.

GTA3 is definitely my favorite of the series. It was just totally original, and I liked the setting more than Vice City or San Andreas. I also liked the fact that the main character was mute, as you could really put yourself into his shoes. As it seems I've been saying alot lately, this game had some major flaws, but its overall greatness made up for them.

I do agree with Dark Catalyst though; GTA did bring alot of morons into gaming, and I've seen and know exactly the type of people he's talking about. Usually the kind of people that like to blast 50 cent in their cars at 7am. I once witnessed a couple of them in a Gamestop before San Andreas came out, saying "yo this game is gonna have drive bye's, thats phat" to each other with wide eyes as if that was the most incredible gameplay feature ever invented.

In San Andreas I guess mountains may have been considered 'dead space' since there was really nothing going on, but I really enjoyed biking up them.

In terms of humor (OG Loc), characters (Samuel L. Jackson's best performance since Pulp Fiction), mission design (my favorite mission was the 'burn the crops' mission) and vehicle selection, San Andreas is far and away my favorite GTA.

Both are fantastic games with awesome gameplay and themes that are extremely rare in gaming, but in Vice City you play as a mobster in 80's Miami, you get to assemble a group of specialized crooks in order to rob El Banco Corrupto Grande, manage your own porn studio devising insanely hilarious over-the-top marketing schemes, meet a rock band made up of drunken and drugged Scotsmen, work for a psychotic drug overlord...all the while listening to A Flock of Seagulls. It has a great idea, unfortuanetly it falls short of being on the greatest of all time list. GTA 3 suffered from horrendus gameplay design, auto aiming was broken, combat sucked, drving was bad, framerate, distance fog, the missions got repetitive. From that list it seems like the game is bad but its not, somehow you can still look past those issues and have fun, at least the first time around, I can't replay San Andreas because it suffers from the same issues (the controls/camera are streamlined though) and since it has so many missions the game loses steam in after the badlands, LV was fun though, (but it was really fun when you went back to a rioting Los Santos) plus the fact that there are 100 or so missions just overwhelms me. Hopefully GTA 4 get those issues straightened out.
