Why are they still releasing big time games on the 360/PS3?

It is holding this gen back. Imagine if Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Bioshock, Oblivion, Dead Rising, Gears of War, Halo 3 (early 7th gen gems) had to adopt to the 360/PS3 and the Ps2, Xbox..... all those games would be lackluster ps2 games with flashy graphics and that is what is making games like, Destiny, Titanfall, Watch Dogs half ass. They have to fit the game mechanics to the 360 and then they spice the game up with shiny graphics..

Blows my mind why developers think this is a good idea

Because there are millions of customers that still are only on the previous gen and games are expensive to make. It'll transition eventually. I was still very happy with Titanfall, Watch Dogs, and Destiny on my Xbox One they were excellent games.

@downnice95: It's to help people transition from one generation to the next. They've done it with the 6th through 7th generations, and they're doing it for the 7th through 8th.

Yea, another post about how game companies are not acting the best way for him/her so they are being mean and screwing over gamers.

If they can get it to run on older gen, why not release it on there? There's still a lot of potential customers there. I don't think anything is being held back. You can't expect games to be pushing current systems to their limits already.

Mass Effect 1 - 2007, 2 years after X360 release
Fallout 3 - 2008, 3 years after X360 release
Bioshock - 2007, 2 years after X360 release
TES: Oblivion - 2006, 1 year after X360 release
Dead Rising - 2006, 1 year after X360 release
Gears of War - 2006, 1 year after X360 release

Because you got a bigger userbase of last-gen consoles out there, this is common practise, so I'm assuming this is your first time going next-gen?

Because there are still gamers like me who see no need to buy a PS4 / X1 as of now. Both consoles have no real system sellers at this point.

Even though I have gone next-gen, I couldn't agree more.

I guess its simple because of the market trend that still in rise for PS3 and Xbox 360. May be that we will see huge graphic console sensor games for PS4 and X1 in next couple of years but no need to that quickly cause I dont wana buy PS4 and X1 yet.

It's not really holding things back. It's just that the current wave of games were made for the last gen. Just took them so long to get to the final product that they ended up porting up to the new consoles.

Theres also the possibilty that you may have overestimated the power of current gen consoles....

Just build a rig.... If you're that desperate for pixels.

That's not really true anymore as Forza Horizon 2 just released yesterday, but the PS4 is a wasteland with no killer apps.

Yet.

@downnice95: Err.. what's the rush? technology is new and devs would take their time to properly utilize it! no need to jump the gun and ditch the ps3/360 which has a great userbase and not to mention they cost less than next gen games!

There's more people with the old consoles than people with the new ones. Bigger install base means better chance of getting decent profits.

Because 360 and PS3 are still great consoles and next gen is mildly overrated and lacks 'killer' titles, exclusive or not.

Like many people I like to wait a year after next gen machines have come out to because the early games don't impress (just look at next gen FIFA 14 for the best example of that: stripped down game modes and buggy and underwhelming), the price drops and maybe even a slimline version is out by then. I am only now seriously thinking of buying a next gen machine but only for the exclusive titles. I still have a pile of untried 360 games still to play.

Because there is almost 160million PS3´s/Xbox360´s out there while there is only around 16-17mill Ps4/X1´s

So its common business sense to make things that sell.

@downnice95:

Xbox 360s sold to date: 80+ million.
PS3s sold to date: 80+ million.
Xbox Ones sold to date: 5 million (ish).
PS4s sold to date: 10+ million.

Question: "Why are they still releasing big time games on the 360/PS3?"

Answer: Because... math.

@downnice95: Because 160+ PS360 million combined install base = $$$

Yes, cross generational multiplats on PS4/Xbone suck.

After PS3 game out, multi-plats were still released on PS2. After PS2 came out, multi-plats were still released on PS1. It will take a while before last-gen consoles get phased-out.

Two reasons:

1-modern games cost so much to make that the current gen install base in not yet big enough to support them.

2-last gen consoles were already so powerful that most games can be easily ported back. John Carmack even said that from a game design perspective, there's nothing the Doom 4 engine can do that his last engine couldn't. It just makes things prettier.
