• His Machivellian philosophy in which any means are justified by an end goal is a strong one, but it ultimately fails.

2. Wilhelm "Deathshead" Strasse - Wolfenstein: The New Order

• His philosophy, based on that of Nietzsche, in which the supermen shall take their rightful place as the rulers of the society, disregarding morals, is another strong philosophy, but fails as well.

3. Damon Gant -Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

• A clever leader who believes justice is the weaker stance, and that injustice is really what is justice , similar to Thrasymachus of ancient Greece.

4. Ridley Hardiman (Nohman) - Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner

• Nohman believes the discovery of the resource "metatron" is an indicator that the next natural step for society is destruction. He might be psychotic.

5. Dracula - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Luca Blight from Suikoden 2. He wreaked havoc whenever he would show up, probably the only villain in video games i ever hated with a passion.

Greatest is a phrase for popularity or superiority in which case-

King Bowser, M. Bison and Sephiroth come out on top.

However, I think she was a far more effective villain in the original games than SCII. Heart of the Swarm she is almost an anti-hero (don't spoil anything, I'm only a handful of missions in) and Mengsk is the villain of Wings of Liberty.

Honourable mention: Calypso from the Twisted Metal series. He brings in all these social outcasts to participate in a hellish tournament only to "reward" them with ironic twists on their most passionate desires. Absolutely diabolical.

David from the Last of Us. He's not some caricature of evil like most gaming villains, but a glimpse of mankind at its most desperate. He's also far stronger than your character. You do not feel on equal footing and there's no place to level-up to come back stronger. You want to run from him as much as you want to kill him. To me, this kind of conflict is more like the conflicts you experience in life in that you don't overcome something because you are stronger, but rather you overcome something and become stronger.

1. Liquid Ocelot (Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots): Was so close to enslaving the entire planet with the Sons of the Patriots system and later pulled the biggest plot twist in the whole MGS series.

2. The End (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater): No words to express how great of a villian he was or how epic the battle was between him and Big Boss.

3. Sonny Forelli (Grand Theft Auto: Vice City): "I'm looking for the money, Sonny. Don't worry."

4. Mundus (Devil May Cry): The man behind all your misfortune and betrayals, and the insane battle you have against him.

5. G-man (Half-Life franchise): The most quiet and lethal villian in all of gaming.

Considering I don't care for story in a video game, I rarely think about this, but I'll give it a try.

• Ganondorf from Wind Waker: He was actually relatable in this game. There was a sound reason for his actions which is rare for a Zelda game.
• Kessler from inFAMOUS: saying anything interesting about him would be a spoiler, but the twist in this game was very satisfying.
• Fawful from Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga: He's just so unique and entertaining
• The Waterwraith from Pikmin 2: This thing was devastating and surrounded in mystery. I still remember the cries of all those blue pikmin lost to that interdimensional being.
