@Spinnerweb: yeah I can unerstand why some would love the sports genre despite is just recreating or simulating the practice or gameplay of sports in the gaming/virtual world.
1. The competetiveness. Sports games have similarities with other genres such as Racing(not including non-racing driving games such as Euro Truck Simulator and Crazy Taxi as those don't really have any competition/competitiveness in them), Fighting(then again there is boxing games and wrestling games which apperrantlly seem to fall under both categories), shooters and strategy games.
And
2. Sports fanship/enthusiasm. I know not all sporrs fans enjoy the genre. But some do it for the heck of it. Like me and I am huge Wrestling, Soccer(as I also call it "football") and Skateboarding and I play games based on those sporrs for the heck of it. Is like playing a sport without facing the consequences or problems that you get in the real world/life when playing sports like fouls and injuries.
As for the life sim genre. I don't see what is fun about it. There might be some exceptions. I've always to play The Sims and from what I've heard. Euro Truck Simulator is fun as heck(from what I've heard haven't played it yet and wanna try it out myself). It is kind of a driving game with the life sim aspect I guess. I have seen gameplay footage of Farming Simulator and it looks boring as sh't. Is like doing school in a game. That's no fun, but I challenge to see if I can challenge myself to unlock some achivements in my Xbox 360'with this game.
