What's the best Dragon Quest?

I've only played a little of the very first one on the NES. With all the attention on DQIX coming out on DS recently, I've started to consider picking on of these games up. I've been thinking about getting DQV for DS. What do you guys know about the Dragon Quest games? I like my RPGs with good stories and character development.

Dragon Quest VIII is great. Look it up and see for yourself, but its definitely my favorite.

I loved DW VII, my personal favorite so far in the series.

Dragon Quest/Warrior I through IV are NES games I own 1-3 and I am looking to purhase IV. I would give a recommendation to ANY of the DQ games... DQ is my second favorite roleplaying series behind only the Breath of Fire series.

Dragon Quest VIIis a massive game... and good.

Dragon Quest VIII is an awesome game, but I would save it until later. Seeing as though it kind of trumps the rest of the series as far as cutsecene and voice overs.

I would start with II and play through the series in order... that is of course if you already beat the original!

What do you guys think about Dragon Quest V? What about it do you like? I've heard this one focuses on story more than the older ones did (since it was the first one to be released for the Super Famicom).

What I like about DQV is the monster recruiting. The only problem with it is that it's based entirely on probability rather than any influence on the player's part. It's still cool to get powerful monsters in your party though.

The DS version has a fun minigame called Traps n' Treasure. You can get a lot of powerful items and get lots of cash from playing the game.

Dragon Quest 8 on the PS2 was fantastic. this is the only DQ that I've played. I probably put 100 hours on this game.

Dragon Quest VIII for PS2 was probably the best for me... I have a lot of fond memories of playing the first few on the NES, but they're very primitive by modern standards and newcomers may find that a hard barrier to transcend.

I played about 10 hours of DWVII on the PS1, got to a point where I needed a shard of a tablet, realized that I missed the opportunity to get it, and the game would not go back to let me get it. Needless to say, I put down that junk and never picked it up again, lest I get 80 hours into it, find out I missed something during those 80 hours, and would have to start all over again. Not my idea of a fun time...

On the other hand, I only started DQVIII but it seems very good. I'll definitely finish it someday.

DQ1 or Dragon Warrior, can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet, it might be fairly dated and short but it was revolutionary and I've played it a handful of times.

Am I the ONLY PERSON WHO LIKED DRAGON QUEST VI? Out of all the Dragon Quest games I've played, (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, and all the monsters except caravan heart) It has by far had one of the best stories. Plus, anyone remember MORTAMOR AND NOKTURNUS FROM THE LEGEND SCROLLS IN DQIX? Yeah, they wer from 6(VI)

V, VI, VIII and IX are my favorites.

Necro as it may be, i can't praise V enough. By far, the best entry in the series with a unique storytelling and engrossing characters.
