1. TMNT: Out of the Shadows
2. Fire Emblem: Awakening
3. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
4. GTA Online
5. Deadpool
Honorable Mentions to:
Tomb Raider
Payday 2
I've got to give it to Out of the Shadows for being the first Ninja Turtles game worth a damn in decades and quite possibly the best ever.
Fire Emblem was the best strategy game I've played in years, and it almost supplanted The Sacred Stones as my favorite FE ever.
Monster Hunter 3 U was my first ever Monster Hunter game, and while it took some doing to get into, I quickly found it to be the best ARPG I've played in years, and the best on a handheld ever.
I feel the need to note specifically that I didn't think much of GTA5. I haven't really been impressed with GTA since 3. But GTA Online was the first game to give a world to a group of players and say, "Go for it." 4 tried that, but it didn't offer the kind of distractions required to keep it interesting. They learned a lot from Red Dead and(apparently- I never played it) Max Payne 3. And it shows.
Deadpool was a pretty competent melee shooter. It's really nothing revolutionary- a fact that Deadpool shouts out frequently in the early parts of the game. Really, competent it may be, but it didn't need to be considering how goddamn FUNNY it is.
Honorable mention to Tomb Raider though it was knocked out of the running because so damn many of her deaths seemed needlessly gruesome.
And lastly, Payday 2. It would have made the list, but the damned OP demanded only 5. It is an EXCELLENT scenario generator. As a game it was less successful. If the could combine the scenarios from Payday 2 into GTA Online, it would be the all-time best crime game ever.
