What makes a game get your attention to follow it, watch videos, and eventually buying it?

Multiplayer games -> A balanced game with good maps and a good community.
Platform games -> responsible controls and a difficulty that is hard enough but achievable without becoming frustrating or requiring pixel perfect jumps/timing.
RPG / Adventure games -> a good story, meaningful skill trees, a world that is worth exploring.
Open world -> Plenty of activities to do post game, a city worth exploring, something to do with the money you get.
Racing games: Nice cars, tracks and a sense of speed.
Also, good non-cheating A.I. for single player games.
It needs to have a good singleplayer for me to get really interested
Yeah same... I won't go near a MP focused game.

So many games have throw-away MP like Tomb Raider

What's your point??

A bad mp mode won't keep my attention to a game which is suppose to be sp
Colours. I'm not even kidding, if a game is colourful, it'll grab my attention. MK8, Splatoon... pretty much everything Nintendo, The Witness, Rime, Ori and the Blind Forest, No Man's Sky, Sunset Overdrive. Games with interesting palettes strike far better first impressions than your typical brown and grey shooters for me.
Obviously I don't judge a game on that, but it goes a long way to making me want to find out more about that game.
If it has a unique/interesting concept? Graphics play a major role in initial interest; if it looks unique, visually, I'll probably follow it.

Ah yes agreed. That makes me especially mad, when a developer throws in a MP mode in a mainly SP game for the sake of it.
@hrt_rulz01: I hold that if a game isn't worse for a feature being there, be it co-op or multiplayer, it isn't something to worry about.
Excellent gameplay, controls, and smooth technical performance.
Also a game that works at launch.
How do you know all this from a reveal trailer?

I was wondering this exact same thing, maybe speedfreak doesn't buy games at launch.

I don't buy games at launch either, but a game can grab my attention long before I know anything about gameplay, controls or smooth technical performance.
I am expecting a game like mixture of
watch dogs (with quite hack features),
heisit missions, kill everybody, free roam and dating girls like Gta 5
awesome race circuits with tuning shop in Nfs and
inclusion of kung fu fight like sleeping dogs...
nearly all Sci Fi / Cyberpunk themed games get my attention ( like Mass effect , deus ex , portal , halo .... ) , so does the fantasy RPG games like dragon age, TES and the witcher . I would say the world and the universe and how interesting it looks plays a big role . I'm also more into single player . MP games like Titanfall , COD or battlefield don't get my attention that much .
4 words where i suddenly turn my head away and puke
MMORPG, MULTIPLAYER-ONLY, PLAY4FREE, ALWAYS-ON
the day i try one of those games have yet to come
..for the rest i actually play every kind of game, from strategy games over mindtwisting puzzlegames to brainless shooters
After gaming for 16 years I tend to stick with certain genres like tps, wrpg, jrpg, some fps and arpgs. I also tend to buy games from series/franchises like LoZ, RE, TES just to name a few. I'm also a huge sci-fi and fantasy nerd so games like Mass Effect, The Witcher, Lords of the Fallen ect ect tend to wow me.
