This one's really hard but if I had to choose it would probably be GTA IV or GTA Vice City.

Vice City was good for sure. But i'd say it's GTAV. They have managed to improve that title every time.
As for biggest initial impact, i'd go for GTA3. It translated the 2D games in to a 3D gameplay marvelously well. It was stunning. I guess i can't still call it my favourite, since i'd rather play the newest title these days because they have indeed only manage to improve it.
Grand Theft Auto 4. I like its realistic and grounded approach. I'm not a huge fan of over the top goofy/cartoonish style.

I would have to go with GTA IV for the story alone and the DLC.
Some of the best DLC made for a game out there and it added so much to the game that each DLC felt like a new game.
followed by Vice , SA , 3 and then V which is a disaster compared to the other games.
SAN ANDREAS 4EVER! SA may not have the realistic physics or story of GTA4 or the colorful awesome 80's miami scarface, it still has the second biggest map after GTA5 and more missions than GTA5 and i just LOVE the sun bleached 90's theme of SA. I may be biased cus san andreas is close to my heart cus its one of the first PS2 games i've played (though TBF Vice city is also one of my first ps2 games).
I must say I love all the gta games but gta v is my favourite because of the variety of cars and customisations
Vice City. It had the best soundtrack and setting, plus the game was still kind of arcadey. The more realistic the GTA games get, the less fun they are, IMO.
Since III, GTA has been the only series that not only lives up to my expectations with every new iteration, but surpasses them. Each game is my favorite until the next comes out. Before V, I played GTA IV and it's episodes in mission order (bouncing back and forth between the three games when the narrative called for it) in a loop and I'd done the same thing with San Andreas before that and before that Vice City, etc.
GTA V is my current favorite and has also become one of my favorite open world first person games to boot (I only play the single player in first person). Currently going through it for the sixth time and I'm still having a blast.
hey!! like so much GTA Vice City game . its extremely intersting his one's truly hard however in the event that I needed to pick it would presumably be GTA IV .
To pick a favorite is hard, I mean 3 changed the game, Vice City was just incredible with great music and just all out fun to play, SA took it to the next step with Gangland stuff and a MASSIVE map (Plus it had Samuel L Jackson), 4 grounded the series and brought it into next gen and had an amazing story (Niko its your cousin Roman! LETS GO BOWLING!) and then there was GTA 5 and what is not to love about that game? The heist where a blast, the characters where awesome and you could do so much. Picking between them is like choosing between some of my favorite beers, its just really hard to pick a top for me.
If by GTA you mean an open world game that has firm roots in reality, then Sleeping Dogs. It's far more entertaining than GTAV. Which is the only one I've played. But still.
Vice city for sure. It was the first game i could buy for myself.. The other ones my mom had to buy for me ^^' The songs on radio Flash FM is what i remember the best.. And of course going ape shit crazy on a car with a hammer. And just F***ing people up in the night club with a chainsaw.. That game really set the tone for the rest of the series. And man.. Tommy is still the most badass character in the whole GTA universe.
I've really, really enjoyed them all (GTA 3, VC, SA, IV, V), but V is the only one I actually took the time to play the story to completion in. And that's mostly because I got way too distracted messing around in the other ones to focus on the story. When you're given a playground, after all, you play.
So V is my favorite for that reason, simply as a matter of circumstance, but if I were to take the time and go back to play (or watch) the stories of the other ones, my opinion might change.
Story, atmosphere and music wise, I'd have to go for Vice City. Not only was it a sequel to one of the most revolutionary games of all time, it was BETTER. How many times can you say that?
In terms of overall package, with the most well rounded GTA experience, I'd have to go for GTA V. If my PS3 hadn't broken, I would still be playing it now.
@xunorthodox: Nice. 5 would edge 4 for me. I love 4 though unlike many others. I guess being a NYer helps. All time Vice City though. I was born in 1972 and my tweens and teens were in that 80s era. Great fun.

Exactly what I was thinking. Nothing will replicate the feeling of playing GTA3 for the first time back then, but it hasn't aged that well. San Andreas would be my favorite.
San Andreas, I have it on both my PC and my PS4. However, to be honest I'm more into Saints Row these days due to the character customization features. I also have GTA III and Vice city on my PS2.
I played this game Voice Of City version and I think I am only one in my country who end of this Game facts :D
China Town Wars was the only one i got into, and actually finished. The drug dealing was a drug itself in that game.

Agreed. The economy and "buy low, sell high" aspect made it (pardon the pun) addictive as all hell. I spent so much time in that game just selling drugs.
