This assumes you paid for the game, so PS+, Games with gold and F2P games don't count although can be mentioned. System is irrelevant, even previous generations.

PS4: So far it's been Shadow of Mordor and Dying Light. GTA V is racking up more time lately as well.

PS3: Mass Effect Trilogy. About 60 hours in each game and I still haven't done everything. Saints Row The Third. After that would be Just Cause 2. I spent a lot of time in that game but eventually got too bored of it to complete everything. i hated how part of liberating a town (or whatever) involved having to find upgrade parts. The rest was looking around for the enemies buildings/statues to destroy.

Xbox 360: Crackdown. Really enjoyed that game. The second one not as much, but still fun.

Wii: Super Smash Bros Brawl! The other games I had barely saw light next to that. Super Mario Galaxy probably would have been next up if it hadn't disappeared :-/. Don't know if it was stolen or what happened.

PS2: Disgaea. Power leveling and beating optional end game bosses.

PS1: Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy Tactics.

Super throwback - NES: River City Ransom. This one never gets old for me. Intrigued by RCR Underground. Will be checking it out. Also Megaman games. Ready for Mighty No 9 as well.

Edit: PC - Civ 2 and Alpha Centauri back in the day. Not much of a PC gamer now.

How about you guys?

As far as games that aren't Smash Bros go, I think Dragon Quest IX. I have around 180 hours in it and I still pick it up every once in a while. I might try reaching 200 hours this summer depending on how things unfold. Really great game for those like me who love JRPGs. Not for everyone though, because it is technically repetitive and grindy. I don't mind that, though.

I know 200 hours may not be a lot compared to some, but I play A LOT of games, so it's a lot for me. Most RPGs I put around 70 hours in before moving on, but there are exceptions.

But I think with my friends, between all of our copies of Smash Bros Brawl, I have somewhere around 3500- 4000 hours in Brawl (although after a certain point we started playing mods- I haven't played Vanilla Brawl in years). So technically that.

Other games that have given me a great value are Shin Megami Tensei IV, Xenoblade, Borderlands 1 and 2 and Zelda Collector's Edition.

Dragon Age Inquisition is the most recent game. I've poured over 100 hours into it. Same with GTA V, Shadow of Mordor, and Diablo 3

would probably be Guild Wars...I put near 5000 hours into that over six or so years. Bought all the campaigns in CE form, paid a little bit for extra character slots, but I more than got my money's worth.

Skyrim, I think I must be near 1000 because...mods. That's including the time I've spent in the Creation Kit and in third party programs making stuff for use in the game.

Most recently, Path of Exile. Technically I never had to pay a thing, but I did anyway because I wanted to support the devs for their fine work. I was at about 270 hours or so on that last time I looked.

I'm expecting many RPGs to be mentioned since many people value games by length.

Warframe is a FTP (which doesn't really count since the value instantly exceeds price paid), but I did spend 100+ hours on that game and spent a little money on it. Maybe $20. Have to check the exact amount of hours. In all the CODs pre Ghost I had 100s of hours in too - excluding WAW. Wasn't really thinking of MP shooters. Skyrim will get a lot more hours from me when I can sit down and play it.

@allbulldogg: I'm thinking about getting helldivers.

@Lulu_Lulu: Hmmm, another useless non contributing post. Next time say nothing. Silence is your friend.

Planetside 2 -- Opted to spend $19 on aircraft upgrades on this otherwise free-to-play gankfest...350 hours.

EyE: Divine Cybermancy -- Got it on sale for $1.50...130 hours.

Warframe -- Spent $2 total (on a 2nd battlesuit) and played 50 hours. I'd play more but warframe's greatest strength is its greatest weakness; Co-op shooters are so fun that Warframe has to compete with others for my time. Glad it's doing well though. Space ninjas!

Mass Effect Trilogy, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Total War games, Advance Wars trilogy, Fallout 3, XCOM. Pretty much any rpg or strategy game. Most bang for your buck there, but when you work 8 hours a day, you begin to understand the appeal of games like COD that have shorter single player campaigns. Use to hate those, now i get it.

Dungeons of Dredmor was $5, and I out 200 hours into it.

Tales of Maj'Eyal is a similar story...but I think that was only a couple of dollars?

The Elder Scrolls games on PC. So much there already, but with mods the content is staggering. Especially since you can get them all for around $30.

  • The Witcher II

The PC version of this was amazing. It not only came with the game, but also a 100 page guide, a "making of" DVD with forty minutes of footage + trailers, a soundtrack CD, a map, an oren coin (game currency), a foldout of some sort with a monster description, and an origami paper-craft. All of this for $49 bucks, and it was not the collector's edition. This was easily one of the best values I've ever seen in all my years of gaming. Can't wait to see what they offer for III.

  • Batman: Arkham Asylum and City (Knight soon to be added)

Rocksteady gives serious bang for your buck. There's the main campaign and NG+. On top of this, you have (from the main menu) access to challenge maps (combat & stealth) each of which have a dozen+ environments with varying characteristics to encourage different play styles and tactics. Not content with just this though, Rocksteady takes the time to put in a mode that allows the player to view character trophies, which are all in-game, 3D model character assets to be viewable with a rotatable/zoomable camera. Dozens of characters. I can't wait to see all of Arkham Knight's models up close (especially the Batmobile, which I'm hoping can be transformed at will to watch up close changing into Battlemode). They also have concept art and bios to peruse to learn more about everything to do with the universe. You really can't ask for much more than this.

Both of these games are obviously labors of great love and respect by their developers, and they present a rarely seen value in gaming, especially in this day and age when physical games are often not much more than a disc with an insert with gutted content to be nickel and dimed to you later on.

Minecraft by far.

I got the game back in Beta 1.2_01 for $15. The uniqueness of the game combined with constant tweaking and a smorgasbord of new features since then has returned at least squared that.

Well I'm not sure If I should rate this on content or on play time, but I'm willing to say that almost any game in The Elder Scrolls series could fit these categories. While there are DLC for the three mos modern releases, those being Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, the real deal, as far as content is concerned comes from the modding community. The Elder Scrolls series, as well as Fallout for that matter, have some of the most active mod communities in gaming, allowing for almost unlimited choices and varieties in the games long after the official content has run dry. As far as spent time goes, I've probably put more time in to Elder Scrolls games than any other series, so I'd certainly say that my investment was worth it

Definitely The Last of Us Remastered for PS4. I've beaten it twice and have gotten most of the DLC. It has such a rich storyline that captivates such a wide audience.

Probably NBA 2k14, Dragon Age series and Mass Effect trilogy.

Spent hundreds of hours on those.

Forza 4 by far with over 500 hours racked up on Raptr

So many games fit into this list. Some of the best bang for the buck games off the top of my head. In no particular order, and by no means is this a complete list:

  • Diablo 2 and 3
  • Skyrim (hell pretty much any Elder Scrolls game.
  • New Vegas
  • The Dragon Age series
  • The Mass Effect Series.
  • Uncharted 1 and 2
  • Minecraft.
  • Bioshock Series.
  • Arkham Series.
  • The Orange Box (and of course Half Life, HL2, Portal) Portal 2
  • The Gears Series
  • The Doom Series
  • Duke Nukem 3D
  • Jedi Knight series
  • Borderlands 1 and 2.
  • Pretty much every Ratchet and Clank game (other than the stupid tower defense one, and All4One),
  • The original Stronghold
  • Age of Empires 1 and 2.
  • Locomotion.

Hm - perhaps Age of Empires1+2, Diablo1+2, and some of my favorite cRPGs (e.g. Baldur's Gate, Planescape, etc). Maybe Colonization+Civ games.

But it's really hard to say - for me the value is about enjoyment, and it's very hard for me to rank which games have given the most enjoyment. And would a really enjoyable long game give me more value than an incredibly enjoyable shorter game? Hard for me to rank. Portal1+2 for example are absurdly short but absurdly enjoyable.

And single games I spent a lot of time on:
Disgaea 1-4, D2
Mario Party 2-3
Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny
Super Mario Kart/64/Double Dash
Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl/4

I could list hundreds, but just a bunch of the top of my head in no particular order:

Warcraft 3 (ah, the community brought out so many different things for this over the years - I even still play it sometimes today and the community is still going at that, including making completely new custom maps, even if it's not nearly as active as it used to be) - easily many many thousands of hours were spent playing this between the campaign, basic RTS, and custom maps - both offline single player and online or LAN mutliplayer maps. This ones probably at the top of my list for value, but I don't think people buying it these days would get as much out of it as I did over the years. Other Blizzard titles like starcraft(+broad war) and older warcraft RTS games I got a lot out of too, but Warcraft 3 I just spent so much more time on than the others.

Disgaea (series, but the 1st game stands out as the one I probably put the most hours into personally) - PS2 game that I went all out and truly 100%ed - anyone that's played the disgaea games knows how big a task that is, maxing out every character and passing stats on only to start levelling again until you couldn't pass on more stats by resetting, maxing out all ultimate weapons, etc. I have no idea just how many hours I spent playing that game.

Dragon Age: Origins - well over 500 hours out of this one so far, and I still have a bunch of different characters all with very different builds to get through Awakening and the other continuation stories before I finally put it to rest. I got it pretty cheap too, around £10 at the time iirc. I could also list a wide variety of other RPG games (including most older FF titles and a large number of games from the Megaten series that I've always got a lot out of). I'd probably include the 1st borderlands too - though the 2nd one cost so much that I can't consider it to be high value for money compared to others, despite the sheer amount of playtime. That said, you can get the whole lot for fairly cheap these days if you're willing to wait for a hefty sale on steam.

One Way Heroics, Binding of Isaac(+WotL) and several other cheap indie roguelikes that have kept me occupied for 100+hours each - Tales of Maj'Eyal and Nuklear Dawn will no doubt be joining this particular sub-list for me in the future.

The Worms series - Worms Armageddon probably being the one I've played the most in the end, I don't have a clue how many hours I played that game.

Various fighting series games: Tekken games, particularly Tekken 3 and Tekken 5; Soul Edge/Blade and the Soul Calibur games, DoA, Street Fighter, MK, Bloody Roar, Destrega, and many others I certainly got more than enough value for money out of back in the day. Not so much for recent fighting games, but that's partially because it's a lot harder to get people to play locally for me now, and it's just not the same experience online, regardless of who my opponents are.

AI War: Fleet Command (+add ons) is something I got cheap and will likely last me thousands of hours in the long run too - though finding the time to play just a single game is hard due to how long each game can be. One of the gems from Arcen games - a company that is very much hit and miss with the games they bring out, this one being one of the hits - at least for space strategy fans.

I'll not go into older games, I'd be here all day - that, and objectively, if I bought them now I rather than back in the day I probably wouldn't think as much of them either.

There's also free MMOs and other multiplayer online games like DOTA2 of course, but they're good value because you get a lot of playtime without having to spend a penny on them, which is a little different.
