What are some games out there that are unique/provide a different experience than some of the more popular mainstream games? Are there any hidden gems floating around these days?

Nier, which pulls many different gameplay elements together from many genres (hack and slash, action adventure, RPG, platforming, puzzle). It doesnt do a stellar job at any element, but the mix of genres creates a unique and quirky gameplay experience. Not to mention the story of the game is fantastic-a dark and epic fantasy tale-without long cutscenes to break up the pace. There is one long text dump in the middle, but it's not too bad.

Katamari games are quite unique, the one I played first was Beautiful Katamari on the 360, i had lots of fun in it. You just roll around a ball and it gets bigger to more crap you get into it, eventually you go from rolling little things like tennis balls, to people, then to cars, then eventually cities, then eventually even planets... thats how big your katamari will get eventually in the later levels.

Pretty much if either the ps4 or xbox one get a good next gen katamari game, i'm gonna bite the bullet and buy one of these god awful next gen consoles just to play it.

Red Faction Guerilla isn't unique, but it is a hidden gem and a hell of a lot of fun.
