A friend linked me to this blog post from Lunarch Studios, an independent video game development company. And it got me thinking about how dependent many turn-based and card-style games are on luck rather than skill.

TL;DR: Many pro video game players in games like Hearthstone are complaining that the game depends too heavily on RNG. Too much reliance on absolute luck (rather than "yomi luck," or mind games) can destroy players' enjoyment.

What do you think?

I think thats the whole point. Who plays a card game for skill anyway ? If you want skill then play a sport or become a cop.

All card games are luck based, no matter if you build a great deck. It always comes down to what card you draw yet, luck.

@jimmy_russell: yep, dumbed-down casualization is based on money.

If you don't like luck you shouldn't be playing anything involving cards.

No.

Extra Credits did an episode on this a few weeks ago:

Basically the gist of it is that randomness isn't a factor over a large enough sampling of games. A single elimination or even double elimination Hearthstone tournament would be crappy because no matter how skilled a player you are or how good your deck is, you could get 1 or 2 bad draws and lose, but over a higher number of games the good luck/bad luck averages out. Hell, even poker tournaments have a degree of random chance in every hand, but in the end it's the most skillful players who walk away with the pot.
