So I have been blown away from YouTube footage I have seen on Max Payne 3 and I am thinking on getting it but do you need to play the first 2 to understand the story?

No, you don't need to. But, all three games are connected because they follow the same continuous story of the main character. Yeah, it would be nice for you to play them, because you become more personal with the character of Max Payne, and thus become more immersed, you know him better, you know why he does what he does, and so on.

Why wouldn't you play the first two if you want to get into this series? Btw., i suggest getting the PC version of the first two, because those are very easy to control, and have good visuals - essentially aged well, wile the consoles versions are crap (no hate involved, it's a known fact).

Sounds like a plan, I will see if i can find the PC versions, there old game so they should run fine. Shameful, but I never knew about the series until I saw Max Payne 3 advertised. Last Generation I never saw the other games in the shops, but I was seeing the hype for Max Payne 3 so I looked it up on YouTube and was blown away on how good it looked.

Yeah, the first one is hard, and doesn't look great, though at max resolution/AA it looks good. The controls are fluid, solid and there are no framerate issues, and the story is very dark. Max Payne 2 though still looks quite good at max., even after all these years.

These are really excellent games, with a memorable protagonist. One of my favorite series of all times.

You don't have to. But, it would be nice that way you can familiarize yourself and know what to expect in Max Payne 3. I loved Max Payne 2, it's dark story the action and at the time the graphics. I'd recommend you play them if you have a PS2 or Xbox.

No.

Just rent Max Payne the movie, that will bring you up to date on the plot.

If i was you I would play them. They are great games and they are cheap as chips on Steam. I'm planning on going through them again before I play 3

Is the movie adaptation any good?

Getting back on-topic, I hope they provide some kind of synopsis as to what happened in the first two games so that you are brought up to speed. I understand having to play the first two to know everything, but I no longer own a PS2 and don't have access to either game. Max Payne 3 will be the first entry for me.

Agree completly, playing them is not neccary, butr they are still great games, especially number 2. and yeah the PC versions were better for both, they're both on steam now for cheap.

Yeah it is. I don't see why Zombiekiller7 told OP to go see it. It had nothing to do with the games.

+50% of the movie had nothing to do with the game. So no.
