Well, I have picked up my PS4, my extra controller, Eye... thing..., Screed 4, and Killzone.

Now they get to sit in a closet and wait until Christmas because my family is cruel that way. Sigh. Such a perfect day... :(

I don't understand the Christmas delay.

It's just a thing with my family. They want the gifts to be wrapped and under the tree come Christmas. Something about the ritual.

It's really not that big of a deal. I'm playing XCOM: Enemy Within right now anyhow. By the time I'm done with that, the X1 will be out and I'll be more interested in Dead Rising 3 and Forza Motorsport 5 than Killzone: Shadow Fall or Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. So the wait isn't really that bad. Most of the games I want for PS4 don't come out until March anyway (inFamous: Second Son and Destiny if you're wondering).

I probably would have held off getting it at all, but you never know if stock is going to be readily available. And my family always says I'm difficult to shop for because when I want something, I usually just go out and pick it up so there's rarely anything I'm really wanting. So this year, they get to give me a present I'm really excited to get my hands on.

So I've played a lot of Knack earlier and it's actually a lot of fun. Fuck the 4/10 review that Tom did for it; it's an absolute blast. It's not the best-looking game in the world, but the gameplay is fun and it's a good starting point for the PS4, IMO.

#204 Posted by CarnageHeart (18316 posts) -

My daughters are playing the Playroom right now (playing with the little robots). Doesn't seem like there is a lot of depth but its cute and clever. The speakers in the controller do a nice job of adding depth to the sound (yes, depth is my word of the day).

The camera is vastly better than that of the PS3 (whose picture always looked dim even in bright light). By way of contrast, the PS4's camera makes a picture which is bright even in dim light (kind of like a Technicolor effect applied to reality).

I really f-ed up. I just cant believe I didn't preorder in store instead of online. Hell I could have woken up 10 minutes early and went to bestbuy before work and grabbed one. Now I'm stuck waiting until Monday for the delivery because these major chains couldn't think ahead and ship it one day early.

I was so hyped...been waiting forever for this weekend, its all about the goddamn first weekend when things are most fun. I won't even feel like playing it on Monday. None of my friends will be over its going to suck. Seriously Fuck this, I'm so pissed.

#207 Posted by S0lidSnake (29001 posts) -

@F1Lengend: That sucks man. If it makes you any better, PSN is in shambles. Games aren't all that great and the new shiny feeling has been replaced by a feeling of frustration and disappointment.

So while your delay sucks, it's probably for the best.

#208 Posted by dvader654 (44752 posts) -

NBA2K is nuts, I cant compare to current gen and I have not played one of these since 2K11, the presentation is amazing!!! It has real life NBA stats and highlights every single night. Load screens show you who is actually playing tonight in the NBA. I did an NBA today game with the Heat and Mavs who play tonight and the announcers said "this is the last game in Heats 4 game home stand", it is the last night of our 4 game home stand, wow!

The faces are crazy good, they nailed almost everyones mannerisms. They got actual audio from the player interviews last year so you hear that in game, lip synching is terrible but it works enough. Oh the game soundtrack is incredible, Daft Punk, hell yes.

Oh and it plays well of course. Here is a video I took showing the halftime presentation and gameplay from two camera angles.

BTW these uploaded videos do not look as good as it does on TV, that should be obvious.

I'm in the same boat. A fedex center, which is 20 minutes away from my house, has my ps4 and they won't ship it until monday. I can't even pick it up at the fedex center either.:(

But like SolidSnake said, probably best to wait until Monday to see if the PSN issue cleans up.

So can anyone on your friends list just watch what you're doing at anytime or do I and them need to be signed up for that on something like Twitch?

#211 Posted by Metamania (11964 posts) -

Also, to people that say that PSN is not working, it was working fine for me earlier. I was able to access the store and see what it had. I even started a download for Warframe (which I decided to stop midway through).

You have to be broadcasting then we can watch what you are playing. Hit the share button.

PS3 PSN is working, so the stores and friends lists work. PS4 stuff like the friend feed and some other features are off and on.

When are the next shipments of PS4s coming?

I exchanged NBA2K14 for KZ:SF. @Metamania, I am thinking of getting Knack despite any bad reviews because it looks decent. Would you say it is worth buying?

#214 Posted by IndianaPwns39 (5037 posts) -

Well I can't get onto PSN, which sucks. I have the whole weekend off work so hopefully I'll be able to get on and play some Battlefield 4 with my friends who, incidentally, had no issues connecting.

Other than that, initial reactions have been very positive.

I really like the Dualshock 4. It's comfortable and everything is an improvement. The triggers are the best change here but I also really like the new analog sticks as they feel tighter and less crappy than the DS3.

The UI design is slick and runs very well. It seems very user friendly and aside from getting that "Playstation Network is currently down for maintenance" message everything works fine so far.

As for the games:

Assassin's Creed IV is shaping up to be an exceptional game. It runs smooth, though it looks to be locked at 30 FPS. I only played it for a couple hours but it feels much more compelling than the last AC games and it's kinda weird for me, personally, to be excited about an AC game. Visuals are pretty much whatever, as is with most cross gen games it isn't anything to write home about.

Need for Speed Rivals is a lot of fun. Pretty much what you expect from an arcade racer just with a bit more visual enhancements. It's pretty cool seeing leaves blow all over the place and the way your car reacts with the various environmental changes, such as rain. This one looks better, technically, than ACIV but still has that cross gen feel where, while very good looking, doesn't exactly wow. The game take itself way too seriously and sets a tone that doesn't exactly seem fun, but the actual racing is a blast.

Killzone Shadow Fall is an interesting game. Visually, this is the reason to be excited for next gen. This, as a day one title, is impressive and I'm eager to see what the console is going to do in the future. Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, let's see what you guys got! As for the gameplay, well personally I love it. It takes some ques from Far Cry 3. For example, if you stealth kill an enemy you can throw his knife at another unsuspecting enemy. It runs nice and plays great but, if you're a Killzone fan, it dropped a lot of what made Killzone Killzone. There's no more cover system, enemy AI isn't nearly as tight as before (I'm playing on hard too), and guns lost their weighty feel. The game is fine, great even, just different which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I am going to seriously skullfuck someone if my shit doesn't get here tonight. No more online ordering for me; this sucks! Especially since I'm out of town for a week starting Monday!

Got online and downloaded Resogun :D

What a beautiful piece of colorful mayhem.

#217 Edited by Grieverr (2586 posts) -

My experience has been positive so far. PSN does keep going up and down. Maybe Sony wasn't ready...

I really enjoy Knack. I haven't read the review but I know it's got low scores. It's definitely not a new standard in action/platform games, but it is solid and fun. It's fairly straightforward and definitely more challenging than the graphics would lead you to believe. I think anyone who's seen videos or played the kiosk, and liked it, should get it.

Damn that's the worst. I'm surprised you are still holding out hope, here in Canada nothing gets shipped after 5pm. I would go crazy having to wait another full week though, good luck.

Man the last console I picked up at launch, I was 19 and had the wits to preorder in store (360). Never again.

The MP is still Killzone. There is absolutely no aim-assist and high player which makes for some challenging shootouts. The game is pure gun porn at 60 fps. Amazing stuff.

I played today as a medic and Tactician combo. You get points for players using your spawn point which is awesome. At one point while defending a bomb site, I revived 15 players straight while the rest spawned behind me.

Awesome game.

You should try Resogun. Gorgeous game. I finally beat the first level after ten tries though I wasn't able to save 6 out of 10 humans. :(

Why'd you stop? It's a good, mindless shoot-grind that I see tiding me over until the better things that next-gen has to offer come along. I would prefer if there was more loot, but I enjoy simple games like this, just usually they don't come in the form of a shooter (been playing Path of Exile until now). It starts out kinda slow, but then the game starts throwing more at you and you'll unlock more upgrade potential on your frames/weapons. Good game for when you just want action and would prefer to not have story get in the way. Touch pad takes a bit of getting used to in this one.

But I listened to Chris Watters talk about it in his review and one of the things I didn't like about it was the fact that you had to buy your own stuff through real money. I don't like that application too much.

@BranKetra It's simple, mindless fun. It has elements of a platformer and a lot of fighting. So far, dealing with enemies seem to be a breeze and controlling Knack is fun. I would say give it a shot. Again, it's not the best game on the PS4, but it's a good game on its own. Also, ignore reviews. Reviews should mean jackshit to anyone these days. Play a game and make up your own mind about it, good or bad. That's how it should be done. :)

I'm really happy to hear that about the MP in Killzone. I always liked it and it sounds like it's intact. I'll give it a shot in a bit.

My friends want to play Battlefield but I'm having connection issues left and right. Luckily, the PS4 let's you jump in and out of various games so while the online was giving me the middle finger I just played more Resogun. I'm on the last stage and it's beating the shit out of me! Addicting though. Super gorgeous when you win a level and watch all the glorious, glorious particle effects.

#224 Edited by Shame-usBlackley (18266 posts) -

It got here at 5 til 8. :/ But I guess that's better than not at all. I've already hooked it up, and have been playing Resogun and Killzone. Here are a few thoughts on the system and the games:

The controller is fucking fabulous. It's probably supplanted the 360 controller as my favorite of all time. It is super comfortable, the button layout is fantastic, and the sticks feel glorious. Gone also are the shit triggers from the Dual Shock 3... what a pleasant surprise this is... the only negative is that I have a hard time finding the option button when I want to pause a game. I also am pretty impressed by the quality of the sound through the speaker. Seriously, mad, mad props on an amazing controller here.

The system is louder than I expected. It ranges from about PS3 levels to 360. It's more of a whine than the shuddering, sputtering roar of the 360, but it's still not as quiet as I had expected. Not a huge deal, but it's definitely there.

The UI is obviously inherited from the PS3. I've never been a huge fan of the XMB, and I still can't find anything on the store, but it's extremely fast and snappy.

PSN is working fine for me. I was able to get on, set up, and download the update quickly and with no problems at all. No complaints here. The share feature is up and running as well, and seems pretty cool. I also really liked how fast the system gets you playing a game while it installs the game in the background -- this is going to become a requirement for me in the future, because I'd gotten tired of coming home and installing a game for fifteen minutes or so before being able to play. With this, you're in and playing in under a minute, and that's pretty awesome.

Resogun is insane. It starts off very mellow as all good shooters do, but it quickly gets out of hand and I could feel myself slipping into the zone with the game even after only spending an hour with it. It's also ridiculously good looking, controls great, and has enough strategic elements to offer a ton of depth for masters. I got this for free with the PSN + subscription, but I'd have paid full price for the game easily.

Killzone also looks amazing. During the intro, I was looking at one of the NPC's and it was just jaw-dropping to see how far removed this is even from other shooters I've played recently. And while the game starts slow, it isn't crazy ass slow like Uncharted 3 or anything. It's a bit of backstory melded with mechanics introductions, and that's fine. I also really like the idea of the OWL and how the rappel shtick adds a unique twist to it. Although I have noticed that the number of areas you can rappel to are somewhat limited. I also like the the OWL is an offensive tool as well. In one area, I'd triggered alarms and had to use it to simultaneously defend and hack the alarm terminals to shut them off. Some of the vistas in the game are insane, and easily nothing that could have been done on last generation hardware. However, some of the animations are very janky and seem decidedly last gen.

I am going to go back to Resogun and hold off on installing Black Flag until tomorrow. My new tag is: MrBlackley. Overall, I'm really happy with the machine. There's a lot to like here, and when you consider launches are usually shitty, this is going to be a great system once people really start programming around it.

#225 Edited by BranKetra (47779 posts) -

@Metamania: My favorable opinion of game reviews is they offer unbiased and objective reports while not disregarding subjective influences because they are part of the experience that is being an individual. That said, I do not agree with reviews sometimes because the balance of objective and subjective points is not enough of one or the other. Also, I would really like to get something besides only shooters and Just Dance 2014. I do not have anything against Just Dance particularly, but I would rather play a different game this holiday season.

#226 Posted by IndianaPwns39 (5037 posts) -

PSN has been running smooth for a little while and I wanted to share some thoughts with you guys.

I really like the share feature. Nothing mind blowing has been shown yet, just headshot videos and the like. This is going to be really cool once my friends and I get used to it.

I played more Need for Speed with the internet connection and freaking drool, I love the way that game functions now. I was racing someone and in the middle of it we drove head first through a 4 player chase between two cops and two racers while they were doing their own thing. It made our race way more intense and had that Dark Souls feel to it where you meet random strangers at the best of times. Really, really cool.

#227 Posted by S0lidSnake (29001 posts) -

^Yup. Looks like they have all the PSN issues sorted out. I was even able to get the newsfeed to come up and was pleasently surprised to see that even videos and pictures uploaded to facebook can be viewed directly from that Newsfeed.

The Share feature is really cool, but the video doesn't record the last 15 minutes. I just had a phenomenal run in KZ where I went on a 7 killstreak while defending a bomb and reviving seven different people. But when I viewed the video, it only had the games I had played 15 minutes ago. Maybe it records in 15 minute intervals? Sounds like a bug.

KZ mp is phenomenal. It's very difficult simply because there is no auto-aim and you have to aim for once. It's 60 fps and has no input lag so people cant complain about controls either. It's pure skill and knowledge of the game. Had some really good games with dvader. We need to try Resogun coop next. Taru joined when I was in the middle of the final boss and did not want to fuck up by pausing the game. ;p

Tried Contrast for like five seconds. Not my kinda game.

Tomorrow will try Ass Creed, BF4, Ghosts and Fifa.

#228 Posted by MirkoS77 (6997 posts) -

I'm glad I didn't get this at midnight and waited till mid-day, PSN worked great. I was pleasantly surprised that it automatically started downloading the patch. Resogun is an amazingly fun game which should hold me over until something else comes along (Diablo III+expansion will probably be my first). Cool looking system, quiet, though it does in fact wobble but not a big deal as it was a quick fix. Overall I'm happy so far.

#229 Posted by dvader654 (44752 posts) -

I tried broadcasting, I watched myself on the computer, it worked really well! Its not HD quality but you can see just fine what I am playing. I will broadcast tomorrow.

Yeah. I had an awesome run in Need for Speed where I raced with seven other people in a Hot Pursuit match and came out on top. I wanted to record it but when I went to do so the last 15 minutes of that particular race weren't up. However, it popped up later on, oddly.

Likely just a kink that'll get worked out.

Just beat Resogun. On to Veteran difficulty :D

So can people not hear your mic if they're not in a group with you? Because KZ is totally quiet. Managed to cobble together a group of mic users over time, but just through blind invites and they all said the same - that they hadn't heard anyone saying a word until we invited them.

Anyway, love the mp. By far my favorite map is penthouse because of all the destructible walls and being able to knock out windows, walk along ledges and then ambush the guy in the next room.

I will say there's too much shotgun, not enough support spawn points/turrets. Turrets are so beastly in this game, and short of unlocking the missile secondary will take a shit-ton of ammo for a player to take down. I think people are starting to catch on, though. Support class right now is the game breaker. When we went up against guys running a few support players, the matches were just epic. Seriously, though, sometimes I feel like the only dumb bastard not using a shotgun.

Also, calling bullshit on the ISA uniforms in the forest. Natural camo. And the rest of us are running around in black with glowing red.

Weird, I almost never see shotgun guys. But I agree most teams have no clue how to play. Support class changes everything.

You can build the same equipment by gathering up the necessary components from chest/enemy drops. The ability to buy warframes and such is just if you want to get it quicker. This is actually a pretty common model in free-to-play right now. But you can buy blueprints with in-game cash, which will tell you what parts you need to build the item. Each system has different kinds of loot, so you need to travel around a bit, grinding certain areas for whatever you need.

Today, I exchanged CoD: Ghosts and ACIV for Knack and BF4 which is part of the triple threat I originally intended to buy. I have the games. I have the controller. Now, I just need the console and PS Plus to play how I would like. Resogun seems cool, so I will play that once I purchase a PS4.

But I listened to Chris Watters talk about it in his review and one of the things I didn't like about it was the fact that you had to buy your own stuff through real money. I don't like that application too much.

Yeah, I am starting to realize that some of that. Whenever I try to buy something from the game, it always tells me that I have insufficient platinum something to get it, so I'm thinking it is really asking for real money to buy it. I've started to play the game today and it's just an absolute blast. I really enjoy going through, with random online people, and acting like a team to get through it. It reminded me of the raid dungeons that I did with people online on Defiance for Xbox 360. A total blast!

NBA2K is sweet. Haven't won a game yet, but my team is the Wizards and I'm playing exhibition games against the Miami Heat so that is to be expected. Once I'm really comfortable with the mechanics I'm going to start a season.

Had a fun with Warframe, one of the F2P games on PS4. Its really good, it has all the issues all F2P games have which is that its a time sink if you want all the cool stuff but it plays well and it has that loot game feel. I just think you progress too slow so I may get bored before I get too into it. Still this one is worth checking out.

So can anyone on your friends list just watch what you're doing at anytime or do I and them need to be signed up for that on something like Twitch?

You have to be broadcasting then we can watch what you are playing. Hit the share button.

PS3 PSN is working, so the stores and friends lists work. PS4 stuff like the friend feed and some other features are off and on.

So I have to hit the share button during my gameplay to do so? I heard that you can only share 15 minutes of gameplay, but can you stream longer with that if you broadcast?

Streaming IS broadcasting. Hit the Share button and you will see three options. Edit the recorded video of the last 15 minutes, take a screeshot and stream. You will need to link your twitch or ustream account and then you can share for hours if you want.

I just realized that the PS4 is the loudest when playing the game during the initial install. Installed both Fifa and CoD today and it was louder than my fat 40GB and then after a while it couldn't here it at all.

There is still the initial bluray drive noise when you boot up the game, but once the game loads the PS4 is impressively quiet.

Ghosts is so terrible. Awful spawn points. I kept spawning and dying before i could grab my gun. The framerate is all over the place. It isnt your usual frame drops either. KZ MP drops frames all the time but it feels 60fps because it isnt as jarring as it is CoD. There is massive stuttering that I usually see in poorly optimized PC games. They might fix this but they cant fix the terrible maps, spawn points and ugly as fuck graphics. I still had fun for a while because of how easy it is to get kills. Started out with a 7 killstreak. lol

Campaign starts out with two really impressive setpieces though. IW knows how to make an entertaining SP.

I've seen some discussions in forums on other sites claiming that disgruntled workers at Foxconn intentionally sabotaged some of the PS 4 consoles they were making to protest the working conditions there. I don't know if the claims are true or perhaps just the work of MS's marketing department, but I'm curious to know if anyone is having any hardware problems with theirs or if they are all working OK. I haven't yet bought one and I'm now wondering if I should wait a while.
